JRW & Associates take Championship at Booster Cup

[PORTLAND, OREGON] – Dave Drotzmann, on loan from A-1 Taylor, struck out 10, walked two and allowed one hit in a 9-1 Championship game victory for JRW & Associates of Yakima, WA over the Booster Cup All-Stars.

Most Valuable player 2B Don Cawthron was 3-4 with 4 runs scored and 4 RBI’s in the victory. Catcher Troy Grow chipped in with a 2-3, 2 runs scored and an RBI.

Saturday afternoon’s round robin play was rained out and the Booster Cup resumed Sun at 8:00 AM with a revised schedule.

JRW was down 3-0 to Brotherton Pipe of Grants Pass, OR on Saturday with two more runners in scoring position when the game was suspended due to the rain after JRW’s Kurt Penner hit two batters and walked one with a slick ball. The game resumed Sunday without starting over & JRW took a 11-1 shellacking from Brotherton. Brotherton also won their next game to give them a berth in the Championship game.

The rain shortened schedule advanced the Championship game by several hours and Brotherton decided to forfeit their berth and begin the 5 hour drive home.

JRW & Associates advanced to the Championship game with a 16-4 victory over Phoenix Drug of Portland and a 10-0 win over AA Riteway/ Robie Raines, a second year club from Portland. Most Valuable Pitcher Wade Liberty of JRW was the winning pitcher in these two wins. The big hitters in these two games were 1B Kevin Norton at 3-4 with a Grand Slam, MVP Cawthron at 5-8, 7 RBI’s and CF Tim Fischer at 3-3, 2 RBI’s. 3B Tim Arndt and Drotzmann each had a mop-up inning to close out the games.

Rather than having a forfeit Championship win, Tournament Director Bob Rider asked if JRW would play an All-Star team from the remaining three teams in the tournament. Rose City Merchants pitcher Jim Miles, Jr held JRW to 3 runs until he ran out of gas in the later innings. The tournament was tough on all teams as all the Sat morning games were played in the rain until the tournament was suspended.

Kudo’s to the Athletic Director for the Portland State Womens FP team. Their groundskeeping on the Irv Lind Stadium allowed four hours of play in a steady rain before the field succumbed. Sunday was sunny and the field was in excellent shape.

JRW All-Stars were CF Tim Fischer, 3B Tim Arndt and 1B Kevin Norton.

JRW & Associates’ next action is the Skagit Invite in Mount Vernon on June 16-17.
