NL powers over NB 9-2 at JR MEN’S

Grand slam, three-run blast power NL over NB at Junior Men’s

SUMMERSIDE – A grand slam and three run blast capped off a seven run, third inning as Kelly’s Pub Canadians of Newfoundland and Labrador routed New Brunswick representative Miramichi Vics 9-2 in day two play at the 2007 Causeway Bay Softball Canada Junior Men’s fast pitch championships here in Summerside.
The damage got done in the third after a pair of walks first to Felix Squires then shortstop Justin Gill (1-4) followed with a single. Stephen Strapp (0-2) was then walked to load the bases bringing NL slugger Jon Kane to the plate.

Kane (1-2) made no mistake tagging NB pitcher Jeremy Regan for a long home run that went about 300 feet, scoring all four runs. The onslaught continued when third basemen Shane O’Brien (0-1, walk) was hit by a pitch and then Matt Hill (0-1) was walked. Ken Gosse (1-3, ) sent the first offering from relief pitcher Brandon Gorman out of the park to make it 8-0.

NL pinch hitter Mark Lewis would be walked in the fourth and later score on an error by Vic center-fielder Matt Houcy for the defending champions final run of the game. New Brunswick got their first two runs of the tournament, scoring one each in the fourth and fifth innings. The Vics had nine hits off NL starter Wayne Bruce while NL had just six hits.

Houcy (1-3, two RBI), Jake O’Neil (2-3), Robert Cogswell (2-2), Shane Benjamin (1-3, run scored, triple) did the damage at the dish. Bruce went five innings allowing two runs on nine hits and fanning five for the win. Regan took the loss allowing seven runs on three hits, walking four. Brandon Gorman gave up one run on one hit in the two batters he faced before Benjamin finished it off allowing a run on two while walking two.

SUMMERSIDE (Pat Healey) – The Simcoe Wildcats (Ont 3) made good on their chances with runners in scoring position Monday afternoon, scoring eight runs on five hits in an 8-1 five-inning mercy rule defeat of Quebec on field 2 at the 2007 Causeway Bay Softball Canada Junior Men’s softball championship here in Summerside.

Chris Kett (1-2, run scored, two run home run), Jeff Bassindale (1-3, two RBI), Jamie Davis (1-2, two runs scored, stolen base)and Nathan Fuller (1-2, run scored) led the attack.

Quebec managed just two hits off Simcoe starter Scott Marshall. Those hits came off Maxime Breton (1-2, run scored) and Mathieu Lessard (1-2, RBI).
Marshall walked one and fanned one in earning the win.
Pascal Gonthier suffered the loss, allowing five runs on three hits in one and two third innings, walking two and striking out one. Mathieu Benoit allowed three runs in two and one third innings giving up two hits and walking three.

LATE HEROICS GIVE ELMIRA WIN OVER EAST HANTS

SUMMERSIDE (Pat Healey) – For the second straight game, the Elmira Advance Millwright (Ont. 2) used late inning heroics to come away with a win, this time 5-4 over Nova Scotia reps East Hants Henchmen as day 2 got started at the 2007 Causeway Bay Softball Canada Junior Men’s fast pitch championships in Summerside.

Sunday, Elmira scored the winning run in the seventh in a 3-2 win over Simcoe Wildcats.

Monday, the Ontario No Two entry used just six hits of Nova Scotia ace Cory Avery to score five runs in the win. East Hants pounded out 10 hits off Elmira’s Ryan Shannon and Dan Martin.

Jack McLaren (2-3, run scored, two RBI), Ben Wideman (1-4, run scored, triple), Josh Brohman (1-3, run scored), Ron Dean (1-2, RBI) and Kris Wright (1-3, two runs scored, walk) were tops.

Steve Grant (1-4) with a two-run triple and Andy Chase (2-4, two runs scored) with a solo home run gave East Hants a 3-0 lead after two innings, before Elmira’s bats came alive in the third.

Laurie Isenor (2-3), John Gunn (2-3, run scored, RBI) and Pat Stewart (2-3) were also tops.

Dan Martin earned the win in relief going six and two third innings allowing one run on seven hits, walking one and fanning seven. Ryan Shannon allowed three runs on three hits while striking out one in one and one third innings work.

Avery went the distance allowing four runs on 10 hits walking three and fanning nine in taking the loss.

Elmira sits at 2-0 after the win while East Hants falls to 0-2.
