Jr D’Backs upset Scarborough

SUMMERSIDE – After making an error in the top of the seventh that allowed Scarborough Wolverines (Ont 1) to cash in the tying run and make it 1-1, Colby Bierle used his ball smarts and speed to race from first base all the way home to score the winning run in a 2-1 upset win over the previously undefeated Wolverines. Earl Ghostkeeper (2-3) drove home pinch runner Codie Gross with the game’s first run. The Wolverines countered in the top of the seventh when Ryan Jaynes brought home Brad Fogal when Bierle fumbled the ball to allow the game to tie.

When he had the chance to make amends for his mistake, Bierle (1-4) put it into high gear. “When I the coach waving me that just made me beared down even more and run that much harder,” Bierle said after the thrilling win Barry Sparvier, whose two home runs and three RBI keyed an earlier 5-4 win over Elmira Advance Millwright Tuesday afternoon, was thrilled to get this win over their rivals from Scarborough.

“Every year we’ve played they have beaten us in the five years I have played Junior AAA ball,” he said. “I was jacked for this game. Everybody was.” However, Sparvier knows the Diamondbacks will need to enjoy this tonight and regroup Wednesday morning for another big game, this one against the Newfoundland and Labrador Kelly’s Pub Canadians. “We can’t stay too high for long as we still have to show up tomorrow,” he said. Brady Woods allowed just four hits and fanned five batters in picking up the win. He credited his team with the win.

“Today was the game of my life,” he said about the upset win. Andrew Putham (2-3), Jaynes (1-3, RBI) and Dale Broadway (1-3) were the batters to get hits for the Wolverines. Matt Leahy wasn’t as dominant as he had in previous outings, going six and two third innings allowing 10 hits, walking one and striking out six.
