Playoff Format for 2009 AAU Int’l Tournament

We’ve fielded a number of inquiries about the playoff format for this year’s AAU International Tournament, so decided to cover the subject here in a Morning Brief post.

The AAU International is a four day tournament, with the first two days devoted to pool play, and the second to single elimination playoffs:

Thursday – Pool Play
Friday – Pool Play
Saturday – Single Elimination Bracket Play
Sunday – Single Elimination Bracket Play

32 of the 40 teams to make the Championship playoff bracket, while the other 8 will advance to a Consolation bracket. The Consolation Championship is set for 7pm EST on Saturday night, while the Championship Bracket title game goes off at 2pm EST on Sunday.

With forty teams, this means that 3 teams in each pool are guaranteed a spot in the Championship Playoff Bracket (the top 30 teams), while the final two “wild card” spots will go to the top two fourth place finishing teams. (Tie Breaker rules apply)

Results from Pool play games determine seeding in the playoff brackets.

Tournament tie breaker rules:

A. Record
B. Runs allowed
C. Runs scored
D. Run differential
E. Coin flip
