Deja Vu – Long Beach Black Sox Win at Santa Fe Springs Again

Fred Hanker’s Squad Notches 29th Tournament Title in 6 years

The Long Beach Black Sox captured their third consecutive tournament title in as many weekends, winning Santa Fe Springs IV, July 11-12, 2009. Watch for details at the official league website shortly, by clicking the logo above.

The Long Beach Black Sox and Ron Rupp held on for a 4-2 win to take Santa Fe Springs 4 in a victory over Flor de Cana. Rupp allowed 2 runs in the 3rd at that would be it for Flor de Cana.

The Sox struck early in the first inning of Flor de Cana starter Doug Rooney. Jason Obregon singled and Fred Hanker doubled to right center field as the ball went over the fence holding Obregon at 3rd base. Todd Budke followed with a walk loading the bases. Chris Minogue reached on a fielder’s choice scoring Obregon. Chris Paiva than hit a ground ball to shortstop that was misplayed for an error scoring Hanker.

The game was 2-0 in favor of Long Beach into the 3rd inning when Flor de Cana got on the board. Lou Enriquez singled and reached second on a fielders choice. Dave Hess singled in Enriquez making the score 2-1. David Carrillo doubled home Hess tying the score at 2-2 after 3 innings.

In the Sox 4th Chris Minogue doubled and scored on a Matt Shaw double. Chris Paiva singled Minogue to 3rd and Ken Shaw drove in Minogue on a groundout making the score 4-2 Long Beach. Ron Rupp would go onto retire 12 Flor de Cana hitters in a row to finish out the game and secure the victory for Long Beach. Doug Rooney pitched well in the defeat for Flor de Cana as he went 7 innings allowing only 6 hits and 3 earned runs. Dave Hess was 1-3 with a RBI and run scored and David Carrillo was 1-3 with a RBI double to lead Flor de Cana.

Fred Hanker, Chris Minogue and Matt Shaw each were 1-3 with a run scored. Chris Paiva was 1-3 with a RBI and Ken Shaw was 0-2 with a RBI. Todd Budke was 0-2 with a walk and a run scored. Long Beach wins their 3rd consecutive tournament in 3 weeks and their 5th SCIFL event of 2009 a league record.

The Sox improve to 38-10 in the SCIFL and win their 29th tournament in their 6 years of existence.

Editor’s note: Yesterday, I posted the photo of Todd Budke and Fred Hanker, finding it reminscent of an iconic photo of Maris and Mantle that I recalled seeing as a boy. Today, I found that photo. Remarkable, I thought. Lefty, righty…even the angle of the arms are the same.
