BROOKFIELD EARNS DOUBLE LIFE

Brookfield Elks started the week as under-dogs, but have proven that they can play with the “big dawgs” after dispatching Jarvis Gamblers 8-7 and Kitchener Hallman Rivershark Twins 4-3 in the final day of round-robin action. Unheralded, and projected as “long-shots”, the Elks impressively scrambled their way to a 5-2 W-L record and well-deserved respectability.

A trio of pitchers – Cory Avery (2-0) Brian Urquhart (2-2) and Randy Frame (1-0) – have kept the games close enough enabling team-mates to generate sufficient offence. Avery helped his own cause with a pair of ‘taters and 5 rbis in the high-scoring affair with Jarvis.

Will the streak continue as the “real tournament” starts today with elimination play? Whatever the result, Brookfield has served notice that with a roster of home-grown Nova Scotians, the Maritimers can play decent ball. The Elks are reminiscent of the Brookfield Elks teams of 30 years ago when the Elks garnered the Canadians Gold Medal in 1980.
