The game is a rematch of an earlier season matchup when the Bar of Appleton knocked off then-higher-ranked Decatur in the championship game of the Decatur Shootout tournament.

The win marked the start of the rise of The Bar of Appleton in the rankings, from their preseason ranking of # 12, up to #10, then # 9 and a final ranking of #7. Decatur started the year ranked # 9, dropping one slot to #10 by the final rankings.
The Bar narrowly escaped with a first round win, topping #33 ranked Mickey’s Sled of Michigan (with Michigan veteran Doug Gillis), 2-1 in 11 innings, while Decatur topped a tough # 23 Kitchener-Waterloo (KW) Cubs in their first round game.
