Fargo Bergstrom Kegel Black Knights in Eau Claire, Wisconsin - June 25-27
The Black Knights competed in the Eau Claire Classic over the past weekend
going 2-2. Without the services of 6 regulars including leadoff hitter Jeff
Ellsworth, # 3 hitter Duane Clarkson and pitcher Steve Langley the Black
Knights went 2-2 with a limited roster of 11 players. They scored victories
over the Rice Lake Wis. Orangemen (9-2) and the Bull/Town Line team (ISC
Rank 23) from DePere Wisconsin (3-0) while losing to Circle Tap (ISC Rank
#4) from Denmark Wis. (13-1) and (ISC Rank #3) Madison Wis. The Farm (7-5).
The Black Knights were in every game including the 13-1 defeat to Circle
Tap. The Tappers scored 8 runs in the 7th inning in a contest that was 5-1
after 6 innings and the Black Knights had left 8 base runners stranded to
that point as well as aiding Circle Tap with 7 errors. All in all with a
limited bench and missing key position players and pitching the Black
Knights coaching staff felt good about how their team competed.

The first game of the weekend against the Rice Lake Orangemen say the Black
Knights go with Rich Carney on the rubber as a pickup for missing pitchers
Steve Langley and Chad Klassen. The Black Knights needed to get some
innings out of local Fargo pitcher Carney in this game to take up some
innings to keep regular Darcy Byrne fresh for the remainder of pool play.
Carney did exactly that going 7 innings once sttling done from a shakey
first inning where he gave up 2 runs on 2 of the 4 hits he surrendered for
the game.
It took the Knights a couple of innings to break through but in the 4th
they scored 3 runs on rbi hits by Nathan Giesbrecht and Peter Reimer plus a
sac fly by Eric Lewis. They broke the game open in the 5th inning with 4
runs highlighted by James Kroeker's 3B plus a 2 run single by Peter Reimer.
They scored single runs in each of the last 2 innings to round out their
scoring.

Darcy Byrne throw a 2 hitter to lead the Black Knights over a tough
Bull/Town Line team who used both of their Argentine pitchers in this game
to determine who would advance to the playoff round. The Black Knights
opened the score in the first inning when Jon Lewis scored all the way from
first on aggressive base running after Nathan Giesbrecht lined a shot off
the pitchers leg into shallow left field. With Jeff Goolagong, Australian
National team SS, picking up the ball but running away from the infield
Lewis was sent home beating the throw. The game remained 1-0 until the 5th
when the Black Knights provided Byrne with 2 security runs off a 2 run
single by Nathan Giesbrecht scoring Rob Giesbrecht and James Kroeker who
had singled and walked.

In easily the Black Knights worst game of the year they committed 7 errors
against the #4 ranked team in the world. This came back to haunt them as as
they let down pitchers Darcy Byrne and Rich Carney as it led to 9 unearned
runs. Unlike the previous meeting of these 2 teams in Kimberley where
Circle Tap had to rally from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 in the
playoff round the Tappers were front runners from the start scoring an
unearned run in the first inning. This did not rattle the Knights as they
came back in the second inning to even the game when Peter Reimer drove in
their only run scoring Nathan Giesbrecht who had walked. Circle Tap
immediately responded with 3 runs in the 3rd inning and never looked back
adding another in the 5th. In control with a 4 run lead the game settled
down with no one scoringuntil the 7th when pick up pitcher Rich Carney gave
up 8 Runs on 5 hits however only 2 were earned as the Knights committed 2
errors in the inning. The inning was highlighted by HRs off the bats of
Chris Miljavac and a monster shotshot by Chris Dellarwelle back to back.

Facing the 3rd ranked team in the world Sunday Morning following their
worst loss of the year the Black Knights could have folded the tents with
their short staffed squad but they proved they can play with the Big Boys.
Trailing 4-0 after 3 innings the Knights coaching staff decided to stay
with Darcy Byrne who although he gave up 7 runs pitched very well as he has
seen limited action this year due to weather cancelations. The Black
Knights responded in the 4th with 1 run however The Farm came right back
with 3 of their own over the next 3 innings. Now trailing by 6 in the 7th
inning the Black Knights could have easily looked at their shortened bench
again and folded but they did not. With one out they started their rally.
Jon Lewis walked leading to a monster HR by CF Rob Giesbrecht. This was
immediately followed by Nathan Giesbrecht's 1B and another 2 run HR by
Peter Reimer. With the score now 7-5 Adrian Brown walked, Algar got a
strike out for the second out but Chad Ostermann singled leading to the go
ahead run coming to the plate. Farm Manager Rod Peterson who had Dean
Holoien warming up brought in the big right hander who got the last out of
the inning with a strike out to perserve the win for Paul Alger.
The Black Knights settled for a 2-2 weekend and a quarter-final finish.
This brings the Black Knights record to 23-8 for the season. The Knights
are taking off the long weekend with their next action being July 9-11 in
the Tom Dinsdale Chevy-Cadillac Invitational hosted by #1ranked Broken Bow
Spirit in Grand Island, Nebraska.
