The USA Junior Mens National team played with the Southern California
Alliance the weekend of June 26th. Coach Tim Lyon (South Jordan, UT) and
his staff brought their twenty man squad and faced four C teams as part
of their training for next years World Championships. The team spent the
weekend at the Olympic Training facility located at Chula Vista.
In their first game of the day it was our oldest generation of fast pitch
players against our youngest, and the future of fast pitch. The So Cal
Masters are a 50 and Over team and most have been playing fast pitch since
the 70s. The main part that keeps this team going is their love for the
game. This was Team USA first game of the day and they may have been a
little stiff after a three hour car ride. The Masters won the game 8
1. Robert Donley (Atascadero, CA), Tyler Kelly (Michigan) and Camden
Decker (Il) each had a hit in the game with Jason Loe (South Dakota) and
John Kelly (Iowa) sharing the pitching duties with Jason striking out three
in three-plus innings of work.
The second game of the day was against the So Cal Rebels who played an
extra game to accommodate the four game schedule. Team USA bats came alive
and earned their first win of the day with a 9 0 victory. Team USA had
nine hits with three being for extra bases, including a triple by Mike
Bowen and a 3 3 game for Evan OReilly (CA). Don Potting (WI) had the
pitching duties allowing six hits while striking out two in five innings of
work.
The third game was against Santana Concrete and the slow rise ball of Dave
Meltz. Team USA played tough and scored two runs in a 6 2 loss. Team
USA had four hits in the game. Kyle Davis (South Dakota) pitched for Team
USA and allowed only six hits in six innings and stuck out four.
Team USA exploded for 15 runs in their fourth game against the Primos. The
USA batters had 13 hits with 2 2 performances by Andy Matthews (WI), Bob
Olson (MN), Brandon Huerta (CA) and Drew Bode (WI)going 2 3 with a home
run. Andy also had a home run. John Kelly went the five innings for the
win allowing only three hits and striking out five.
These young men played very well this past weekend and we look forward to
the next tournament. From Coach Tim Lyon, "The coaching staff was very
pleased with the progress the players have made in a short time. The games
in the travel league were great for us because there are things they can
only learn in a game. We are looking forward to playing in Corona later
this month."
Team USA played a local game in San Diego on Thursday evening against the
San Diego Suns. Team USA faired well in their first game of the weekend
defeating the Suns 12 - 5. With the games in Lancaster, Team USA finished
the weekend with a very nice 3 2 record.
