White Sox show strong form in Canada

Saturday July 3rd 2004

The New Zealand women's softball team have shown strong form during their
first week on tour in North America.

In build up to the Canada Cup tournament which starts in Surrey, British
Columbia tomorrow the White Sox have played in a series of exhibition games
recording five wins, one draw and two losses.

The tour started for the New Zealand team with strong victories over
Canadian club sides they defeated the Burnaby Oakeys in two games 4-1 and
10-0 and backed that up with victories over the Canada Cup tournament host
team the White Rock Renegades 4-3 and 12-3.

The competition step up later in the week as they took on the Canadian
Olympic team and fought hard before going down in the first game 3-2.
Canada took it up another level in the second game between the two sides
taking it out 12-0.

In the final warm up matches ahead of the Canada Cup tournament the Kiwis
took out their third victory over Burnaby Oakeys and drew with Chinese
Taipei 2-2.

White Sox team manager Faye Freeman says the draw with Chinese Taipei
showed the potential that the young White Sox team has to compete with the
top teams in the world.

Stand out performers for the White Sox after the first eight games have
been captain Fiona Timu of Auckland and Wellington's Upu Lote with the bat
while American based pitcher Ali Arnold has been in dominant form on the
mound with an earned run average of just 1.08.

Looking ahead to the Canada Cup tournament which starts tomorrow Freeman
says the Kiwi team have been drawn in a very tough pool where they will be
playing against the Japanese Elite team, Canada, Chinese Taipei and four
top American and Canadian club teams. The White Sox will be looking to
finish in the top four in their pool so they carry on through to the top
eight play offs.

Tomorrow the White Sox take on American club side the Bloomington Lady
Hearts at 9.30am (NZT) and then back that up with a game against the
Japanese Elite Team at 2.30pm (NZT).
