Monkton, ON

A fantastic crowd of fastball fans from all across the region gathered in
Monkton, ON for the playoff games of the inaugural World Men's Fastball
Tournament Sunday, with the County Materials of Madison, Wisconsin coming
out as champions. The rain held off (there were two brief rain delays) and
the atmosphere matched the games on the diamond all weekend.

County, having earned a bye into the semi-finals thanks to their 3-0 round
robin record, blasted the number-one ranked Broken Bow Spirit 9-1 in the
minimum five innings to earn a berth in the championship game, where they
battled back from a 3-0 third inning deficit to defeat a valiant Heflin
Builders of Ballston Lake, N.Y., 7-3. County scored twice in the fourth,
then broke the game open in the fifth.

Pat Shannon's two-run home run keyed the four-run fifth which gave County
the victory, and gave him tournament MVP honours, as he went 3-for-4 in the
championship with three-RBI. Pitcher Darren Zack earned the victory, much to
the delight of the fans who clearly were on Zack's side, especially after
local player Jody Eidt, of Mitchell, who plays third base for the Broken Bow
Spirit, was eliminated.

Lefthander Paul Koert pitched all but three innings the entire tournament
for Heflin, and he was named the tournament's top pitcher.

LP - Andrew Kirkpatrick
Jarrad Martin's two-run home run in the 9th was the winning blow. Darren Box
also hit a HR for Broken Bow.
