Team Canada Starts Canada Cup With a Win
(Surrey, BC) Team Canada
Team Canada, playing its first competitive game in over two months, showed
signs of rust in the early going of their first game at the Canada
Cup. The Triple Crown Force (Fort Collins, Colorado) scored 3 unearned
runs in the first 2 innings on 3 Team Canada errors. Starting pitcher Ani
Nyhus and Canadas defense settled down and shut down the Force for the
remainder of the game. Nyhus went 5 and 1/3 innings giving up 3 runs on 4
hits.
Canada got their first run in the 3rd inning when veteran Erin White drove
in Angela Lichty. Canada tied the game in a wild 6th inning. With 2, out
Sasha Olson walked. Kristy Odamura, Rachel Shill and Angela Lichty all
reached base on infield hits all on very close plays. Schill and Lichty
each collected an RBI. Canada completed the come back in the bottom of the
7th when with two out Cindy Eadie walked and stole 2nd base. Erin
Cumpstone hit a bloop single to right field and Eadie beat the throw to the
plate to end the game.
Our team got off to an uncharacteristically slow start defensively stated
Head Coach Mike Renney. But the athletes showed great character to hang
in and come back for the victory
Kaila Holtz picked up the win in relief, pitching 1 2/3 innings allowing no
runs on 1 hits and while striking out 3 batters.
