Late fight back not enough for White Sox
Monday July 5th
A spirited fight back from the New Zealand women's softball team the White
Sox has not been enough for the team to avoid their second loss of the
international Canada Cup tournament.
Playing in Surrey, British Columbia this morning the White Sox have been
beaten 5-3 by American club side the Buffalo Bison's. While the Kiwis out
hit their American counterparts seven hits to five the White Sox couldn't
convert their chances leaving seven runners stranded on base.
The Kiwi side was on the back foot from the outset after the Buffalo
Bison's picked up three runs in the bottom of the second inning and then
went further ahead in the bottom of the fifth inning with another two runs.
While they were behind late in the game the Kiwis refused to give up as
they pulled two runs back in the top of the sixth inning when first captain
Fiona Timu scored on a hit from Karlene Louden and then Togi Lote came home
on an error in the field.
The final blow for the White Sox came in the top of the seventh inning when
they could manage just one further run with Char Pouaka coming home on a
single from Togi Lote.
Cynthia Fallowfield started on the mound for the White Sox pitching two
innings and giving up one hit, two walks and three runs. Hutt Valley
teenager Jessica Hau replaced Fallowfield at the start of the third inning,
she faced 19 batters taking six strikeouts and giving up four hits, three
walks and two runs.
With the bat the stand out performers for the White Sox were designated
hitter Togi Lote and outfielder Karlene Louden who both picked up two hits
from three at bats.
The White Sox will have to bounce back tomorrow on day three of the Canada
Cup tournament as they take on Chinese Taipei at 11.30am (NZT). The New
Zealand team are looking to finish in the top four of their pool thus
qualifying for the top eight championship round.
