Canadian Developmental Team Drop Pair at Canada Cup
(Surrey, BC) Team Canada
The Canadian Development team dropped both games today at the 11th annual
Canada Cup International Women's Softball Tournament in Surrey, BC.
In the first game the Schutt Hurricanes out dueled the Canadians to a 4-0
win. Canadian starter Danielle Lawrie began the game as she finished her
last game. She retired the first 8 Hurricane hitters, 5 by strike
out. However, her opponents strung together 4 consecutive hits in the 3rd
inning to take a 2-0 lead. They added insurance runs in the 4th and 5th
innings.
Lawrie suffered the loss for Canada, going 3 innings, striking out 5,
giving up 3 earned runs on 6 hits. Megan McKenzie pitched the final 3
innings giving up 1 unearned run on 2 hits while striking out one.

In their second game of the day, the Canadian farm squad took on the World
Number 2 ranked team from Japan and lost 10-1. The Canadians wish that
they could erase the second inning when the Japanese offense struck for 10
runs on 7 hits and 3 Canadian errors. Japan pounded out two 3-run home
runs in the inning.
Callie Osborne started the game for Canada and set down the Japan team
1-2-3 in the 1st. Osborne left the game in the second after giving up 4
runs. Melissa Finley pitched the balance of the 2nd and gave up 6 runs (3
unearned). Megan McKenzie shut down the Japanese for the remainder of the
game.
Offensively, Canada scored a run in the 4th when Katy Van Deveire, who
reached on a walk, was driven home by a Janiva Willis sacrifice fly. The
Rossiter sisters, Shannon and Kim, had all 3 of Canada's hits. Older
sister Shannon went 2 for 2 with a single and a double.
"This is a great learning experience for our girls", stated Developmental
Team Head Coach Noreen Murphy. "For many of these athletes, it is the
first time seeing top international competition and we are very happy with
the adjustments and improvements our athletes are making each game."
The losses drop the Developmental Team's record to 1-3. Their next game
will be against the White Rock Renegades on July 7th.
