White Sox fight hard in playoffs
Saturday July 10th
The New Zealand women's softball team have battled hard in their first
playoff game at the international Canada Cup tournament today in Surrey,
British Columbia but have been beaten by Japan 3-0.
While the Kiwis fought hard they couldn't overcome the strong Japanese
Olympic team who started strong with two runs in the first inning and then
backed that up with another run in the fourth.
The White Sox struggled to get bat on ball securing only three safe hits in
the game. Canterbury's Char Pouaka was again strong with the bat picking up
two safe hits but the Kiwi batters didn't hit with enough consistency to
strike back on the scoreboard.
On the mound for the White Sox was pitcher Ali Arnold who had a good game
against the strong hitting Japanese. Arnold pitched all seven innings
facing 33 batters giving up nine hits, two walks and three runs while also
taking eight strikeouts.
While the White Sox may have lost today they are not out of the title race
but they are must win every game from now on. Tomorrow they play American
club side the Schutt Hurricanes from California at 6.30am (NZT).
For the White Sox to take out the title they will have to win three games
tomorrow and then go on and win another two games on the final day of the
tournament.
