Here are Friday’s  morning and afternoon games in the ASA Men’s Major Fast 
Pitch National Championship in South Bend, IN.

HIS Construction 3, Midland, MI Explorers 0

HIS Construction of Houston, TX eliminated the Midland, MI Explorers from 
the ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship Friday. The Explorers 
finished 1-2 in the double-elimination format with Doug Gillis suffering 
his second loss of the tourney. Gillis hurled six innings, giving up seven 
hits and three earned runs. He fanned eight and walked two.
Rob Schweyer got the win on a two-hitter, fanning 11 and walking four in 
seven innings.
Elis Ugueto doubled home a pair of runs in the fifth inning to break open a 
scoreless tie. HIS added another run in the seventh inning.

Blackhawk Athletic Club 12, Dolan and Murphy 4

The Blackhawk Athletic Club of Rockford, ILL., scored its first win in the 
Men’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship, eliminating Dolan and Murphy 
of Aurora, ILL., 12-4, in an elimination mercy game Friday. Dolan and 
Murphy was winless in two games in the championship.
Joe Crouch started for Blackhawk before Ray Reynolds came on to collect the 
win, pitching 4 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and walking one. He fanned 
seven in evening his tournament record at 1-1.
Phil Dobbs led the 12-hit attack for the winners, driving in five runs with 
a pair  of homers in the third and fourth innings. Catcher Chad Maxon also 
had a solo homer in a six-run third.Jarod Gatusha had a two-run homer in 
the first for the losers.

Imaging Solutions Knights 10, The Freight 1

The Imaging Solutions Knights of Fargo, ND scored their first win in the 
Men’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship with 10-1 loser’s bracket win 
over The Freight of Vandalia, Ill in six innings.
Scott Deutsch went 2-for-4 for the winners and drove in four runs including 
hitting a three-run homer in the sixth inning. Greg Cascaes added three 
hits and also scored a pair of runs and Tony Kunka smacked a pair of hits, 
including an RBI triple.
James Speral got the win for Solutions going five innings and allowing five 
hits. Brian Sturdy absorbed the loss, hurling four innings with two walks 
and five strikeouts.Mike Simmons and Bob Nagel had two hits apiece for the 
losers.

Pueblo Bandits 3, Bloomington, ILL Stix  1

The Pueblo Bandits improved to 2-1 in the ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch 
National Championship Friday with a 3-1 victory over the Bloomington, ILL. 
Stix.
Regan Manley and Jeremy Manley combined to hurl the win for the Bandits, 
who have won twice since losing their opener. Bobby Ginger took the loss 
for the Stix, allowing seven hits and three earned runs, while striking out 
11. The loss was the second in three games for the Stix, which was eliminated.
Cliff Wisdom led the Bandits with three hits in four at-bats including a 
pair of doubles. Jason Shae hit his second homer of the tournament in the 
first inning and Shaun Vanduvall accounted for the run in the second inning 
with his first homer of the tournament. Dave Willert had the only hit for 
the Stixa single in the seventh inning. Dan Butler’s sacrifice fly scored 
the lone Bloomington run.

The Freight 7, Ashland Coors Light 2

The Freight of Vandalia, ILL  (1-1) eliminated Ashland Coors Light of 
Ashland, OH (0-2) from the ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch  National 
Championship Friday scoring three times in the fifth and four in the 
seventh inning.
Brad Sturdy got the win in relief of starter Marty Close, pitching three 
innings, walking one and striking out three. Rich Well’s triple scored 
three of the four runs in the seventh inning and Mike Simmons (1-3, two-run 
triple) and Ron Nagel (3-for-3, 1 RBI) accounted for all of the runs in the 
fifth inning.
Mark Hastings suffered his second loss of the tournament, giving up four 
hits and three earned runs in 6 2/3 innings.

Pueblo Bandits 3, Indiana Jaybirds 0

Scoring three times in the top of the seventh inning, the Pueblo Bandits of 
Aurora, CO evened their record at 1-1 in the Men’s Major Fast Pitch 
National Championship in eliminating the Indiana Jaybirds  of  Anderson, IN 
(0-2) from the tournament Friday.
An infield error scored the first run and Nick Frank’s single up the middle 
scored the other two runs for the Bandits in the seventh after the teams 
had battled to a scoreless tie through six innings. Jason Shae had a pair 
of singles in four at-bats for the winners.
Jeremy Manley allowed two hits and fanned 15 in getting his first  victory 
after an opening game loss. George Samons suffered his second loss in as 
many games for the Jaybirds, allowing five hits and two earned runs. He 
walked one and struck out three. Brandon Libler and Jeremy Quire had the 
hits for the Jaybirds.

Midland, MI Explorers 8, Plangger’s Furniture 0

Midland’s Explorers evened its record in the Men’s Major Fast Pitch 
National Championship (1-1) as it eliminated Plangger’s Furniture of South 
Bend, IN  (0-2) from the tournament Friday.
Grant Patterson hurled a two-hitter as Midland won its 22nd game of the 
season against 18 losses. Patterson’s batterymate, Terry Boetsma, drove in 
three runs with a homer and a single and Eddy Ketelhut plated two with a 
homer and a single. Kyle Beane’s two-run homer in the sixth inning finished 
the scoring for the Explorers.
Kelly Harold took the loss, allowing nine hits in five innings. He walked 
three and struck out five.
Catcher Sean Zaborowski and Mark Mannering had singles for Plangger’s, 
which was eliminated from the tourney for the second year in a row in two 
games.

Heflin Builders 9, Blackhawk Athletic Club, Rockford, ILL 0

Doug Sleep hurled a two-hitter and fanned seven batters as Heflin Builders 
remained undefeated (2-0) in beating the Blackhawk Athletic Club, which was 
playing its opening game.
Heflin collected 12 hits off losing hurler Ray Reynolds, who allowed 12 
hits and nine earned runs. Reynolds struck out four and didn’t walk any 
batters.
Two of the hits Reynolds allowed were a pair of home runs---a three-run 
smash by Steve Price in the fifth inning and a two-run roundtripper by Tony 
Gabriel in the second inning.

Broken Bow Spirit 3, Imaging Solutions Knights 1

The Broken Bow Spirit of Broken Bow, NE remained unbeaten (2-0)  with a 3-1 
decision against the Imaging Solutions Knights of Fargo, ND, making its 
debut in the ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship after playing 
Class A for more than 20 years.
After the Knights’ Tony Kunka scored on a passed ball in the first inning, 
Broken Bow came back to tie the game in the fifth inning on Mike Dryer’s 
two-out double to right field. Dyer’s double scored Steve Schott who 
doubled to left center following an out.
Dyer won the game for Broken Bow with a two-out single off losing pitcher 
Michael White in the sixth inning. White went six innings, allowing five 
hits and three earned runs. He struck out seven and walked an identical 
number in suffering his 11th defeat against 33 wins in ASA national 
championship play.
Doug Middleton replaced Broken Bow starter Frank Cox in the sixth inning 
and collected the win to improve his record in ASA national championship 
play to 26-15.  Cox struck out 11 batters before Middleton came on to hurl 
the sixth with Gerald Muizelaar finishing in the circle for the winners.

Lafayette Pub 7, Bloomington Stix 0

Craig Gibson allowed three hits and had two hits in four at-bats in leading 
the Lafayette Pub of St. Louis, MO to a 7-0 win past the Bloomington Stix 
(1-1).
Brad Johnson led the Lafayette offense with three hits in four at-bats and 
drove in three runs, including hitting a solo homer in the third. Mark 
Kleffner (2-for-4) also had a solo homer for the winners in the seventh 
inning off losing hurler Adam Folkard, now 1-1 in the tourney.
Folkard allowed 12 hits and five earned runs in his compete game 
performance, fanning 15 and walking three. Vic Johns IV, (double), Doug 
Williams and Joe Moore had the three Bloomington hits.

The Bull/Townline 3, HIS Construction 1

Chris Delorit’s two-run homer in the fourth inning proved to be the margin 
of victory for the Bull/Townline (2-0) of DePere, WI  in the Men’s Major 
Fast Pitch National Championship.
It was the opening game for HIS Construction. Bull/Townline  won its 
opener  Thursday on a forfeit after Separators of New Castle, IN called and 
said it wasn’t coming.
Sebastian Gervasuth got the win for Bull/Townline and fanned 11 batters, 
allowing six hits and walking two. Losing pitcher was Terry Luster who 
allowed five hits, struck out eight and walked two in six innings.
