DEAN HOLOIEN FANS RECORD 21 BATTERS IN ASA MAJOR FAST PITCH NATIONAL 
CHAMPIONSHIP;
BROKEN BOW, CIRCLE TAP, FRED’S INTERIORS AND THE FARM TAVERN ADVANCE 
TO  SATURAY’S SEMI-FINALS

SOUTH BEND, IN – Records are made to be broken. And pitcher Dean Holoien of 
The Farm Tavern  broke one here Friday in the ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch 
National Championship.
The hard-throwing Holoien  broke the ASA strikeout record for seven innings 
by fanning 21 in a 6-2 win over The Bull/Townline of DePere, WI for the 
Farm’s second win in this championship and seventh in a row the past two 
nationals. The old record for a seven-inning single game was 20 by Chris 
Wilson of Stoneman, MA in the  1997 ASA National Championship.
In getting his first win of this national championship, Holoien allowed two 
runs and five hits, walking only one. The only non-K out was a 
caught-stealing   in the second and Matt Denny reaching first on a passed 
ball by catcher Todd Twachtmann in the seventh inning.
Besides being effective in the circle, Holoien showed his offensive talents 
by going 2-for-3 including a solo homer in the fourth inning. It was his 
second homer of the tournament.
Batterymate Twachtmann had a two-run homer in the sixth inning off relief 
hurler Jeff Goolagong, who hurled two innings and allowed three runs (two 
earned). Goolagong also had a pair of singles and drove in one of his 
team’s runs. Starter and losing hurler Sebastian Gervasutti allowed three 
runs (two earned), striking out six and walking two.
With the win, The Farm Tavern advances to one of two semi-finals Saturday 
(10 a.m.) and will oppose Broken Bow Spirit of Broken Bow, NE, which won 
its third consecutive game, topping the Winterset A’s of Winterset, 
IA,  4-0, behind the mound tandem of Gerald Muizelaar and Doug Middleton. 
Muizelaar got the win and hurled the first five innings, allowing only a 
fourth inning single by Cory Christensen in the fourth inning.
Muizelaar  (2-0) fanned 11 batters and didn’t allow any free passes. 
Middletown, who played for Frontier Casino last year, fanned five in two 
innings to finish the game.
Sonny Perkins was the losing pitcher for Winterset (1-1) and allowed seven 
hits in his complete-game performance, including a two-run double by Joe 
Morales in the second and a two-run homer by Mike Dyer in the fourth inning.
In the other semi-final Saturday morning, Circle Tap of Green Bay, WI, 
a  5-0 winner Friday against Lafayette Pub of St. Louis, MI will face 
Fred’s Interiors of Quad City, IA, which upset Heflin Builders of  Balston 
Lake, NY, 4-3, for its second win.
Fred’s and Heflin Builders battled to a 3-3 tie through six innings before 
Fred’s scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning.  Daryn 
Miller singled, advanced on an infield out and a passed ball before scoring 
on Billy  Kranz’s RBI double. Kranz had a pair of doubles in four trips to 
the plate to drive in a pair of runs.
For Heflin Builders, Jordan Taveras, Tony Gabriel and Bill McDonald each 
had two hits apiece. McDonald drove in two of the Heflin runs and Steve 
Schucker accounted for the third run with an RBI double. Nick Needham 
homered in the third inning to tie the game for Fred’s.
Quentin Matzner got the win for Fred’s, hurling 5 2/3 innings with seven 
strikeouts and three wins. Tim Jacobs started for Fred’s and hurled the 
first 2 1/3 innings, walking two, allowing three hits and one run (earned). 
Losing pitcher was Paul Koert who went the distance and allowed eight hits 
and four earned runs. He struck out seven and walked one.
Right-hander Dewey Dyck fanned 16 batters and allowed one hit for Circle 
Tap, which was runner-up in last year’s national tourney in Midland, MI. 
Craig Gibson was the losing hurler, allowing five hits and five runs in 
going the distance. Three of the hits Gibson allowed  were homers­two by 
Chris Delarwelle, who was MVP of last year’s national championship, and one 
by Kevin Reichardt.
In loser’s bracket games Saturday, The Bull/Townline will oppose the 
Blackhawk Athletic Club of Rockford, IL at noon and HIS Construction of 
Houston, TX will face Heflin Builders  of Balston Lake, NY. Five games are 
scheduled Saturday with the finals noon Sunday.

             Blackhawk Athletic Club 5, Winterset A’s 4 (nine innings)

In the first extra inning game of the ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch National 
Championship, the Blackhawk Athletic Club of  Rockford, ILL., scored the 
winning run in the bottom of the ninth to upset  the Winterset  A’s of 
Winterset, IA in a loser’s bracket contest--- the last of 19 games Friday.. 
The win improved the Blackhawk record to 2-1 while the loss eliminated 
Winterset (1-2) from the championship. Brian Lucas scored the winning run 
on an error by the second baseman in the bottom of the ninth.
Justin Fudge homered in the fifth for the winners and Cory Christensen 
(3-for-4)  had a homer in the first for Winterset. Tim Hatton and Chad 
Maxon had two hits apiece for Blackhawk.
Chris Bigelow struck out 15 in a losing effort, allowing seven hits and 
five walks. Ray Reynolds got the win, allowing eight hits and also striking 
out 15.

HIS Construction of Houston, TX (2-1)  scored only one run but it was 
enough to eliminate the Lafayette Pub of St. Louis, MO from the ASA Men’s 
Major Fast Pitch National Championship Friday.Lafayette finished 1-2.
Catcher Tom Lehman scored the only run on a pair of wild pitches by losing 
hurler Craig Gibson in the second inning. Terry Luster got the win and 
struck out 16, allowing three hits and no walks. Gibson fanned seven and 
walked one.

             Heflin Builders 4, Imaging Solutions Knights 0

After battling through a scoreless tie for five innings, the Heflin 
Builders  (3-1) of Balston Lake, NY exploded for four runs on five hits in 
the sixth inning to eliminate the Imaging Solutions Knights of Fargo, ND 
from the ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship Friday evening.
Steve Price got the win for Heflin, striking out 12 and allowing only a 
pair of hits. Michael White took the loss, hurling six innings, allowing 
nine hits and four earned runs. He fanned six and walked two. Greg Bouchard 
hurled the last inning for the Knights, who finished 1-2.
Blake Miller (3-for-4), Ed Poirier (2-for-3, 1 RBI) and Bill McDonald 
(2-for-3, 1 RBI) led Heflin. Gregg Cascaes and Steve Baumgartner had 
Knights’ two hits.

             The Bull/Townline 2, Pueblo Bandits 0

Scoring only two runs, The Bull/Townline of DePere, WI eliminated the 
Pueblo Bandits of Aurora, CO  from the ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch National 
Championship Friday. The Bandits tied for ninth with a 2-2 record.
The first run came in the top of the sixth inning when John Zipper got 
aboard on a third strike passed ball, Chris Delorit walked and Brad 
VanderKelen singled  Zipper home. VanderKelen added an insurance run with a 
solo homer leading off the seventh inning. Sebastian Gervasutti  (2-1) 
fanned  15, two less than losing hurler Jeremy Manley. Each pitcher allowed 
three hits.

HIS Construction 3, Midland, MI Explorers 0

HIS Construction of Houston, TX eliminated the Midland, MI Explorers from 
the ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship Friday. The Explorers 
finished 1-2 in the double-elimination format with Doug Gillis suffering 
his second loss of the tourney. Gillis hurled six innings, giving up seven 
hits and three earned runs. He fanned eight and walked two.
Rob Schweyer got the win on a two-hitter, fanning 11 and walking four in 
seven innings.
Elis Ugueto doubled home a pair of runs in the fifth inning to break open a 
scoreless tie. HIS added another run in the seventh inning.

Blackhawk Athletic Club 12, Dolan and Murphy 4

The Blackhawk Athletic Club of Rockford, ILL., scored its first win in the 
Men’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship, eliminating Dolan and Murphy 
of Aurora, ILL., 12-4, in an elimination mercy game Friday. Dolan and 
Murphy was winless in two games in the championship.
Joe Crouch started for Blackhawk before Ray Reynolds came on to collect the 
win, pitching 4 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and walking one. He fanned 
seven in evening his tournament record at 1-1.
Phil Dobbs led the 12-hit attack for the winners, driving in five runs with 
a pair  of homers in the third and fourth innings. Catcher Chad Maxon also 
had a solo homer in a six-run third.Jarod Gatusha had a two-run homer in 
the first for the losers.

Imaging Solutions Knights 10, The Freight 1

The Imaging Solutions Knights of Fargo, ND scored their first win in the 
Men’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship with 10-1 loser’s bracket win 
over The Freight of Vandalia, Ill in six innings.
Scott Deutsch went 2-for-4 for the winners and drove in four runs including 
hitting a three-run homer in the sixth inning. Greg Cascaes added three 
hits and also scored a pair of runs and Tony Kunka smacked a pair of hits, 
including an RBI triple.
James Speral got the win for Solutions going five innings and allowing five 
hits. Brian Sturdy absorbed the loss, hurling four innings with two walks 
and five strikeouts.Mike Simmons and Bob Nagel had two hits apiece for the 
losers.

Pueblo Bandits 3, Bloomington, ILL Stix  1

The Pueblo Bandits improved to 2-1 in the ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch 
National Championship Friday with a 3-1 victory over the Bloomington, ILL. 
Stix.
Regan Manley and Jeremy Manley combined to hurl the win for the Bandits, 
who have won twice since losing their opener. Bobby Ginger took the loss 
for the Stix, allowing seven hits and three earned runs, while striking out 
11. The loss was the second in three games for the Stix, which was eliminated.
Cliff Wisdom led the Bandits with three hits in four at-bats including a 
pair of doubles. Jason Shae hit his second homer of the tournament in the 
first inning and Shaun Vanduvall accounted for the run in the second inning 
with his first homer of the tournament. Dave Willert had the only hit for 
the Stix­a single in the seventh inning. Dan Butler’s sacrifice fly scored 
the lone Bloomington run.

The Freight of Vandalia, ILL  (1-1) eliminated Ashland Coors Light of 
Ashland, OH (0-2) from the ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch  National 
Championship Friday scoring three times in the fifth and four in the 
seventh inning.
Brad Sturdy got the win in relief of starter Marty Close, pitching three 
innings, walking one and striking out three. Rich Well’s triple scored 
three of the four runs in the seventh inning and Mike Simmons (1-3, two-run 
triple) and Ron Nagel (3-for-3, 1 RBI) accounted for all of the runs in the 
fifth inning.
Mark Hastings suffered his second loss of the tournament, giving up four 
hits and three earned runs in 6 2/3 innings.

Pueblo Bandits 3, Indiana Jaybirds 0

Scoring three times in the top of the seventh inning, the Pueblo Bandits of 
Aurora, CO evened their record at 1-1 in the Men’s Major Fast Pitch 
National Championship in eliminating the Indiana Jaybirds  of  Anderson, IN 
(0-2) from the tournament Friday.
An infield error scored the first run and Nick Frank’s single up the middle 
scored the other two runs for the Bandits in the seventh after the teams 
had battled to a scoreless tie through six innings. Jason Shae had a pair 
of singles in four at-bats for the winners.
Jeremy Manley allowed two hits and fanned 15 in getting his first  victory 
after an opening game loss. George Samons suffered his second loss in as 
many games for the Jaybirds, allowing five hits and two earned runs. He 
walked one and struck out three. Brandon Libler and Jeremy Quire had the 
hits for the Jaybirds.

Midland, MI Explorers 8, Plangger’s Furniture 0

Midland’s Explorers evened its record in the Men’s Major Fast Pitch 
National Championship (1-1) as it eliminated Plangger’s Furniture of South 
Bend, IN  (0-2) from the tournament Friday.
Grant Patterson hurled a two-hitter as Midland won its 22nd game of the 
season against 18 losses. Patterson’s batterymate, Terry Boetsma, drove in 
three runs with a homer and a single and Eddy Ketelhut plated two with a 
homer and a single. Kyle Beane’s two-run homer in the sixth inning finished 
the scoring for the Explorers.
Kelly Harold took the loss, allowing nine hits in five innings. He walked 
three and struck out five.
Catcher Sean Zaborowski and Mark Mannering had singles for Plangger’s, 
which was eliminated from the tourney for the second year in a row in two 
games.

Heflin Builders 9, Blackhawk Athletic Club, Rockford, ILL 0

Doug Sleep hurled a two-hitter and fanned seven batters as Heflin Builders 
remained undefeated (2-0) in beating the Blackhawk Athletic Club, which was 
playing its opening game.
Heflin collected 12 hits off losing hurler Ray Reynolds, who allowed 12 
hits and nine earned runs. Reynolds struck out four and didn’t walk any 
batters.
Two of the hits Reynolds allowed were a pair of home runs---a three-run 
smash by Steve Price in the fifth inning and a two-run roundtripper by Tony 
Gabriel in the second inning.

Broken Bow Spirit 3, Imaging Solutions Knights 1

The Broken Bow Spirit of Broken Bow, NE remained unbeaten (2-0)  with a 3-1 
decision against the Imaging Solutions Knights of Fargo, ND, making its 
debut in the ASA Men’s Major Fast Pitch National Championship after playing 
Class A for more than 20 years.
After the Knights’ Tony Kunka scored on a passed ball in the first inning, 
Broken Bow came back to tie the game in the fifth inning on Mike Dryer’s 
two-out double to right field. Dyer’s double scored Steve Schott who 
doubled to left center following an out.
Dyer won the game for Broken Bow with a two-out single off losing pitcher 
Michael White in the sixth inning. White went six innings, allowing five 
hits and three earned runs. He struck out seven and walked an identical 
number in suffering his 11th defeat against 33 wins in ASA national 
championship play.
Doug Middleton replaced Broken Bow starter Frank Cox in the sixth inning 
and collected the win to improve his record in ASA national championship 
play to 26-15.  Cox struck out 11 batters before Middleton came on to hurl 
the sixth with Gerald Muizelaar finishing in the circle for the winners.

Craig Gibson allowed three hits and had two hits in four at-bats in leading 
the Lafayette Pub of St. Louis, MO to a 7-0 win past the Bloomington Stix 
(1-1).
Brad Johnson led the Lafayette offense with three hits in four at-bats and 
drove in three runs, including hitting a solo homer in the third. Mark 
Kleffner (2-for-4) also had a solo homer for the winners in the seventh 
inning off losing hurler Adam Folkard, now 1-1 in the tourney.
Folkard allowed 12 hits and five earned runs in his compete game 
performance, fanning 15 and walking three. Vic Johns IV, (double), Doug 
Williams and Joe Moore had the three Bloomington hits.

The Bull/Townline 3, HIS Construction 1

Chris Delorit’s two-run homer in the fourth inning proved to be the margin 
of victory for the Bull/Townline (2-0) of DePere, WI  in the Men’s Major 
Fast Pitch National Championship.
It was the opening game for HIS Construction. Bull/Townline  won its 
opener  Thursday on a forfeit after Separators of New Castle, IN called and 
said it wasn’t coming.
Sebastian Gervasutti got the win for Bull/Townline and fanned 11 batters, 
allowing six hits and walking two. Losing pitcher was Terry Luster who 
allowed five hits, struck out eight and walked two in six innings.
