Subject: The Quaker Riversharks Capture the NSA World Series in Salem
  Virginia

Lebanon, PA

Over the weekend of 8/6 through 8/8, the Quaker Riversharks traveled to
Salem Virginia to compete in the NSA World Series. It was an extremely
successful weekend as the Sharks went 5-0 to capture the 29 team event.
The facilities are spectacular and the tournament is run extremely well
by Tommy Zehmer.

Quaker opened with a game against a tough squad from Ohio, Preferred
Wood. The game was a lot closer than the 7-3 score indicates. Jason
Smith picked up the win, with Bob Wengert and Todd Moyer chipping in
with doubles. Next up for Quaker was the game of the tournament against
the New York Bombers. The Bombers had Gregg Garrity throwing and hitting
and they proved to be extremely tough. Reno Lato pitched the Riversharks
to a great 2-1 win. Garrity only gave up 3 hits, while Lato almost
matched him by giving up 4 hits. Quaker scratched out 2 runs, both
scored by Bob Wengert, to win this gem of a ball game.

On Sunday morning, the Sharks played the Duncan Bullets from Indiana.
Reno Lato got the call again and pitched well and Jason Smith came in
for the save. Quaker won this game 9-6. The hit attack was led by Steve
Stires with a double and Matt Daley and Todd Moyer each hitting home
runs. Moyer's 3-run shot erased a 3-0 Bullets lead and started the
comeback. Quaker was now in the finals of the winner's bracket and had
to play Elkland Fastpitch from Pennsylvania. The bats came alive as
Quaker scored a 9-2 victory. Paul Batt had a double, Johnny (Blue) Hurst
hit a triple, and Bob Wengert and Frankie DeGroat each hit homeruns.
Jason Smith started but had to leave to catch a flight back to Canada.
Mike Smith relieved and picked up the win.

Quaker waited for the team to come through the loser's bracket and was
not surprised to find that the New York Bombers were the team that
survived. The Bombers were playing their tenth game of the tournament
and sixth of the day. Garrity was throwing his fifth game of the day.
The games finally caught up to the Bombers as they just did not have
much left in the tank. Quaker won this last game 6-1 behind the 3 hit
pitching of Mike Smith. Frankie DeGroat, Mike Rohrer, and Matt Daley
each had doubles for the Sharks.

Matt Daley won the Most Valuable Defensive Player Award, while Mike
Smith won the Most Valuable Pitcher Award. Jason Smith was 1-0 on the
weekend, pitching 10+ innings and picking up 20 strikeouts. Reno Lato
was 2-0 with 17 strikeouts in 13+ innings. Mike Smith was 2-0 with 16
strikeouts in 11 innings while only giving up 1 run. The hitting attack
was led by Frankie DeGroat going 9-19 with a homerun, a double, and 7
RBIs. Mike Smith also chipped in with the bat going 5-12 with 4 RBIs.
Matt Daley was 5-13 with a homerun, a double, and 4 RBIs. Bob Wengert
was 5-17 with a homerun, 3 RBIs, and 9 runs scored.

This was a perfect tournament for the Riversharks as they leave on
Friday of this week to participate in the ISC World Tournament in Fargo, ND.
