Team Canada set to begin Olympic debut Saturday



(Ottawa, ON)  The Canadian Women's Softball Team is now at the Olympic 
village in Athens ready to step onto the field on Saturday August 14th when 
they meet Chinese Taipei in their first game of the 2004 Olympic Summer 
Games.



“We just returned from five days of training in Thessaloniki in a rural 
relaxing setting, stated Head Coach Mike Renney.  “We accomplished a number 
of key things in training and then we went on to settle in at the Olympic 
Village.  We have trained on the Olympic Softball field and are counting 
down into single digits until our first game.”  Renney said:  “We are 
poised for the Olympics where 12 of the 15 athletes are first-time 
Olympians.  Everyone is excited and all are looking forward to commencing 
the Olympic Games on Saturday.”



The team returned to the athlete’s village in Athens on Monday August 9th 
after having traveled to Thessaloniki, a 30 minute plane ride north of 
Athens for training and rest.



Olympic Rookie Pitcher Auburn Sigurdson said:  “We stayed at the Apollo 
Sports Hotel in Thessaloniki to re-group and re-focus on the next phase - 
the final phase of our summer.  The hotel and the facilities were a 
wonderful break from the chaos and intensity of Athens.  Sitting atop a 
hill the hotel looks out past fields and farms towards the ocean.  The 
hotel boasts a 35mx25m pool, weights/cardio room, aerobics studio, sauna, 
hot tub, and a fantastic fenced-in turf soccer field, amongst other 
amenities.   On a patch of un-landscaped, thistle infested dirt, Coach 
Renney and Team Leader Gil Read made two pitching lanes without much more 
than a broken rake and creative imaginations.  They were perfect and 
allowed all four of us (pitchers) to have quality work-outs each day.”
