China shuts down Canada on Day 3 of Olympic Competition
(Ottawa, ON) Canada lost to China 4-2 this morning at the 2004 Olympic
Summer Games in Athens, Greece. Canada was leading the game until the top
of the 6th when China stoll what was going to be a great victory for Canada.
"We came out strong, ready to play and focused," stated first base and
Olympic Veteran Erin White. "However, things went wrong and everything
started to happen. We are just focusing on getting ready for the next game."
After a tough loss to the Greeks last night, Canada was determined and put
themselves on the score board first in this morning's game. Canada went up
2-0 in the 4th inning. Rachel Schill was hit by a pitch, Angela Lichty
singled and Alison Bradley singled to load the bases. Jackie Lance then
hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Schill for Canada's first run. Erin
Cumpstone then stepped up to the plate and hit a suicide squeeze (runner at
3rd and bunted) to score Lichty. Everything was going great for Team
Canada until the top of the 6th inning when Canada made an error which cost
them the tying and winning runs. China made it on base on a ground ball to
short and was safe because of an overthrow to first base which scored runs
tying the game 2-2. China also made a suicide squeeze and put themselves
in the lead 3-2. China then singled but the strong wind took the ball and
dropped in the middle of third and short and both third base Cindy Eadie
and short stop Angela Lichty were not able to catch the ball and China
scored their fourth run. After the 4th run, Auburn Sigurdson went to the
mound to shut the door.
The losing Pitcher was Canada's Lauren Bay who pitched 6 innings, gave up 4
runs on 4 hits, 3 strikeouts and gave up 4 walks. Canada's Auburn
Sigurdson faced 5 batters and had 2 strikeouts.
