Manager Goofs, Team Responds with Extra Inning Win

At the ISC II Tournament of Champions in Fargo, ND, on Wednesday, JRW lost
to the top seeded Thunder of Kemptville, Ontario in their final pool play
game as the Thunder scored 3 unearned runs to erase an early JRW 2-0 lead.
This loss left JRW & Associates with a 1-3 record in Pool "A".

At the team meeting afterwards, Manager Jim Williamson gave an end-of-season
speech, thanking the team and gave a brief preview of what to expect in the
new season.

Shortstop Jacob "the NAFA Stat Man" Andreas said "that we might get in the
elimination round" as JRW was tied with Circle Tap for third place in Pool
A. Manager Jim explained that JRW was tied with Circle Tap at 1-3 and that
CT got the # 3 seed because of their head-to-head win on Tuesday.

Jacob continued with another thought that JRW might get a Wild Card berth.
(The top three teams from each of the 7 pools moved forward and three wild
card teams were to be added to make a 24 team bracket--16 teams in the first
round plus 8 byes).

Manager Jim explained that out of 7 pools, there was sure to be several
teams with 2-2 records that would get the wild card berths. He added "but we
will check the board before we leave".

A check of the bracket board showed that the 4th place teams in all seven
pools had 1-3 records, so selection of the three wild cards would be by the
first tie-breaker - runs allowed. JRW & Associates had allowed only 11 runs
and sneaked into the elimination round as the third wild card team.

There was a frantic run to the parking lot to catch the JRW players who had
"reacted" to Jim's end of season speech. One player even paid $100.00 to
change his plane ticket and leave in the early AM.

With every player notified, the team returned for a 9:00 PM first round
elimination game. The JRW & Associates team from Yakima, WA then advanced to
the second round of elimination play with a 9 inning 2-1 win over the Sioux
Falls (SD) Sox. (Game summary reported earlier).

All wild card teams won their first round elimination game, suggesting lots
of parity in this Tournament of Champions.

Manager Jim Williamson, thoroughly embarrassed and $100.00 poorer (Player
was compensated), thanked the team for their competitiveness. And reflecting
on the win over the Sox, Jim told his players "See, I told you the new
season would be better".
