Canada defeats Italy to stay in playoff running
(Ottawa, ON) In Canada's last game of the round robin play at the Olympic
Games, they defeated Italy 1-0 in 7 innings. Canada's record is now 3-4
and will await the result from the China vs Japan game today to see whether
they secure a playoff berth.
"We knew it was a must win game if we had any hope to make it further,"
stated Pitcher Lauren Bay. " We just kept it simple and we had great
defense to keep the Italians off the bases." When asked about her Olympic
Experience, Lauren said: "I had no idea what to expect at the Olympics and
I am totally blown away. This gives me lots of motivation to come back to
the games."
Canada's Rachel Schill hit a triple in the 2nd inning. Alison Bradley then
stepped up and sacrificed to left field and Schill tagged up at the plate
and scored. Italy almost tied the game in the top of the 7th with a runner
on third base. Lauren Bay walked the lead off batter and when Catcher Erin
Cumpstone attempted to pick at first, the ball was overthrown and the
runner went to second, the batter was then advanced on a wild pitch to
advance the player to third. Bay had a strike out but then the next batter
hit a grounder to third base Cindy Eadie whom the ball bounced off of but
luckily for Canada, in the direction of short stop Angela Lichty, who
picked the ball up and threw to first for the last out of the game to give
Canada it's much needed victory.
Canada's Lauren Bay was the winning pitcher giving up 0 runs, on 2 hits, 2
walks and struck out 12 batters. Italy allowed 0 runs on 1 hit and 2 walks.
Canada is now 3-4. A win for China against Japan and win for Australia vs
Greece will tie Canada and Japan for 4th place. Canada takes 4th because
of their win over Japan in preliminaries. Should Japan defeat China,
Canada and China will tie for 4th and China will take 4th because of win
over Canada in preliminaries. Should any position have a 3 way or more
tie, ranking is decided on the win/loss record for those tied teams only
and should there still be a tie, the runs against will be considered
(lowest runs against ranking higher). The top 4 teams advance to the playoffs
