Tricker takes out softballs top award
Saturday August 21st
Leading his team to a third consecutive world championships victory has
seen New Zealand Community Trust Black Sox coach Don Tricker named
Softballer of the Year at the sports annual awards in Lower Hutt this evening.
Tricker and the Black Sox made history in Christchurch earlier this year
and that performance has seen them dominate the A1 New Zealand Softball Awards.
Along with Tricker taking out the coach of the year award and the supreme
Softball of the Year title, Black Sox pitcher Jim Wana was named male
pitcher of the year while his team mate Stacy McLean was named male player
of the year. Black Sox manager Grant McCarroll picked up the award for
administrator of the year.
Softball New Zealand chief executive Hadyn Smith says given the outstanding
achievement of the Black Sox in claiming their third consecutive title it
is not surprising the team feature strongly in the awards.
He says the team are deserving of every accolade that comes their way
considering the amount of work everyone involved put in to achieve their
ultimate goal.
Smith says the decision to award Tricker the Softball of the Year title was
a unanimous one by the judging panel.
The award isnt just for winning the world champs this year, it is also
for his contribution to our sport in one of the most important years in our
history. On and off the diamond his views and perspectives on our game have
been great, said Smith.
Tricker took on the voluntary role of Black Sox coach in 1998 and has
claimed two world titles with the team. The award winning coach was not in
Lower Hutt to accept the award as he is currently in Athens working with
the Olympic team.
Also recognised this evening has been New Zealand Community Trust White Sox
captain Fiona Timu picking up the award for womens player of the year.
Young rookie pitcher Jessica Hau has also had a strong season awarded
picking up the awards for Female Pitcher of the Year and Emerging womens
