Softball's rich history remembered
Friday August 20th
Softball, a sport rich in history and success will tonight unveil a new
honours board that celebrates the past and acknowledges achievement.
The Honours Board which will be unveiled tonight at the Softball New
Zealand headquarters in Lower Hutt. It has been bequeathed to the sport by
former New Zealand Softball executive officer George Vincent.
For many years the sport has been trying to fund an honours board to mark
softball's past success and achievers but it wasn't until Vincent
bequeathed the money to New Zealand Softball for the specific purpose of
establishing the memorial that it has been able to happen.
New Zealand Softball chief executive Hadyn Smith says the honours board is
very impressive as it details the people who have achieved at the highest
levels of softball and the many volunteers who have given so much to the game.
The board will detail all world championship victories and world
championship captains and coaches, all the inductees into the New Zealand
Softball Hall of Fame, recipients of the New Zealand Softball Distinguished
Service award and Presidents of the New Zealand Softball Association.
Smith says softball has a very rich and successful history and the new
honours board is a great way to celebrate past achievements and inspire the
sports future generations to even greater feats.
While the sports great history will be recognised tonight the future of
softball and its continued development will be the focus for the rest of
the weekend at the New Zealand Softball AGM and annual conference.
This weekend representatives from softball associations around New Zealand
will converge on Lower Hutt to discuss all aspects of the game from the
elite level with international and national league softball through to the
grass roots.
Features of the weekend include: a presentation on how to continue to build
the game on the back of the New Zealand Community Trust Black Sox third
consecutive world title; an independent review of the National League
competition; new coaching directions and the development of youth players.
