Subject: The Quaker Riversharks at the ISC World Tournament

Lebanon PA

The Quaker Riversharks traveled to Fargo, ND to participate in the ISC
World Tournament from August 13th to August 21st. Although the
Riversharks have several players who have participated in this premier
event in the past, this was the first time that this particular team has
played in this venue. Quaker was ranked 27th in the final ISC rankings
and were sent into a tough bracket consisting of Broken Bow, Portland
Demarini, The Bull/Townline, and the Springfield Brandt’s.
Realistically, the team goal was to advance out of pool play into the
round of 16. Ultimately, the Riversharks exceeded these goals by going
3-1 in pool play to advance to the tournament round and then beat a
tough Murphy’s Fish and Chips from Halifax Nova Scotia. Quaker finally
bowed out of the tournament with a loss to Circle Tap. The final overall
record was 4-2 with an 11th place finish.

Quaker opened up in pool play against the Springfield Brandt’s from IL.
Reno Lato took the ball and won a 5 inning game 8-1 with 6 K’s. Hitting
stars for this game included Todd Moyer (2-2), Derrick Zechman (2-3 with
3 RBI’s), Paul Batt (1-2 with a homerun and 3 RBI’s), and Steve Stires
(1-3 with 2 runs scored and a homerun). Next up for the Sharks was
Portland Demarini from Oregon. Jason Smith was given the ball and he
threw a gem as Quaker won the game 2-0. Bob Wengert led the hitting with
a 3-4 effort with a triple and a run scored. Steve Stires was 2-3, while
Paul Batt and Todd Moyer each had RBI’s. The third game turned out to be
a nail biter as Quaker played The Bull/Townline from Wisconsin. Andy
Jackson baffled most of the Bull hitters while Sebastien Gervasutti was
doing the same with the Rivershark hitters. There were only 8 total hits
in the game and the game was scoreless through 6 innings. The Bull did
not score in the 7th and it did not appear as though the Riversharks
would score in the bottom of the 7th. After the first two Rivershark
players went out quietly, Steve Stires singled to right. Paul Batt then
walked and Dan Loney hit the first pitch off the fence in left field to
end the game with a 1-0 Quaker victory. At this point, Quaker had
clinched a spot in the tournament round. A victory against Broken Bow
would mean 2 lives in the next round, while a defeat would mean that
Quaker would have one life. Suffice to say that Broken Bow came to play
as they scored 11 runs in the first inning. The game ended 14-0 after 5
innings. Quaker did muster 3 hits by Todd Moyer (double), Mike Smith,
and Paul Batt.

Quaker opened up tournament play the next day. Team management was
concerned about the impact of the 14-0 drubbing by Bow especially
since the opponent was Murphy’s Fish and Chips from Halifax Nova Scotia.
Andy Jackson toed up and again threw an excellent ball game but it did
not appear to be enough as Halifax scored 2 runs in the 4th. Tim
Macumber silenced the Quaker bats until they quickly erupted in the
bottom of the 5th. Derrick Zechman and Mike Smith singled. Steve Stires
drilled a 3-run home run to right field for the game winner. Andy
Jackson got through the 6th and 7th without giving up a run and the
Riversharks earned a tough 3-2 victory and a date to play Circle Tap.
The Circle Tap bats and arms proved too much as they quickly dispensed
of the Riversharks 11-1 in 5 innings. Todd Evans and Mike Rohrer had the
only hits in this game for Quaker.

Hitting stars for the week were Steve Stires (5-13 with 4 runs scored, 4
RBI’s, and 2 homeruns), Derrick Zechman (3-9 with 2 runs scored, and 3
RBI’s), Bob Wengert (5-16 with 1 run scored, a double, and a triple),
and Paul Batt (3-10 with 1 run scored, 3 RBI’s, and a homerun). Reno
Lato and Jason Smith were both 1-1 while Andy Jackson was 2-0. Steve
Stires also was named a second team All World catcher.

Quaker went 4-2 in this tournament for an 11th place finish. Losses came
at the hands of Broken Bow (1st place) and Circle Tap (4th place). All
in all, the Riversharks played much better than their 27th ranking and
showed that they can compete at this level. Later this week, the
Riversharks will go to Hutchinson Kansas to play in the NAFA AAA event.
