Napanee, Scarborough remain undefeated

By Pat Healey

ALBERTON, PEI
  - Ontario softball rivals Napanee Express and the Scarborough Sabrewolves
are the last teams remaining undefeated following day two at the 2004
Tignish Credit Union Bantam Boys Eastern Canadians in Alberton.

The Express came up with back to back wins over East Hants High Tide 8-1
despite second baseman Taylor MacArthur suffering a MCL injury in the fifth
inning and then beat the Host 8-1.

Scarborough meanwhile had a slightly less exciting day, as they topped
Placentia Lions 7-0 behind solid defence and pitching.

Napanee and Scarborough's on-field rivalry goes back to their battle for
the Ontario Amateur Softball Association (OASA) provincial championship.

Against East Hants, the Express was led by Luc Lahey who helped his cause
both on the slab and at the dish, pitching a six inning one-hit gem, with
the only run being scored on a passed ball.

Lahey (1-3, home run, three RBI), Kyle Lloyd (2-3, RBI, two runs scored,
triple), Kyle Arsenault (1-1, RBI, double, run scored) and the hot hitting
Chris Brown (1-3, two RBI, triple, run scored) led the Express at the plate.

For East Hants, Adam Day (1-3) got the only hit while Zach Sill (0-1, hit
by pitch) scored the only run.

Lahey struck out 13 on route to the win. Losing pitcher was Tim Colbert who
struck out five.

Against the host Athletics, Ryan Wagar (2-3) was the big bat as the Express
scored at least one run in each inning en route to the win.

Wagar hit an inside the park homerun to deep centerfield in the fourth
inning that brought home Kyle Arsenault who walked to get on base.

Also leading Napanee, who were cheered on by Midget Express players Jordan
MacDonald and Andy Madden to name a couple, was Scott Mills (2-2, run
scored, two RBI), Randy Bedwell (1-2, run scored) and Chris Brown (1-2, RBI).

For the host A's, Jeff Hustler (1-2, RBI), Joel MacNeill (1-2) and Mike
MacIsaac (0-0, two walks, run scored) led Alberton.

Winning pitcher Kyle Arsenault struck out nine while losing pitcher Kyle
Richards fanned two batters.

SABERWOLVES TOP LIONS

Matt Martinello (2-3, RBI, two runs scored), Navin Seelochand (1-3), Ryan
McCluskey (2-2, RBI, run scored) and Jamie Wellman (2-2, RBI) pushed the
Shuckie Ramotar-coached team's offense.

For the Lions, Andy McCarthy (1-2) and Johnny O'Reilly (1-2) were the only
two to hit Chris Ramoutar pitching.

Winning pitcher was Ramoutar who struck out nine while Chris Hammond took
the loss fanning five batters.

RICHMOND LOSES TWICE

It wasn't a good day two for the Richmond Red Sox as they were beat by the
East Hants High Tide and Conception Bay South Storm.

Adam Day (2-4, three runs scored, two doubles, walk), Justin Dillman (2-4,
run scored, two RBI, triple), Matt Dillman (1-4, run scored, two RBI),) and
Bryan Gillis (1-4, run scored) led the High Tide attack.

For Richmond (1-2), Chad McNeil (2-3, run scored, RBI) and Ryan Ferrish
(1-3, run scored) was all the offense the Red Sox could muster.

Winning pitcher was Tim Colbert who came on in relief for Jeremy Locke, who
played with the East Hants Peewee team that competed in Alberton last year.
Losing pitcher was Ryan Ferrish.

Against the Storm, Andrew Murphy scored both the runs, unearned, including
the eventual game winning run in the fifth inning as the Conception Bay
South Storm went to 1-1 with the win.

FLYERS FLY PAST MARINERS

C.J. Price (2-3, RBI) and Adam Beck (2-3, RBI) led the New Brunswick All
Star Flyers over the Musq. Harbour Mariners.

For the Mariners, Tim McKay (1-3, double, RBI) brought home Andrew Connelly
in the second, before the Flyers rallied for the win.

Winning pitcher was Kyle Ryan while Andrew Connelly took the loss.

SABERWOLVES TAKE SKILLS; A'S COME SECOND

The Scarborough Saberwolves have laid claim to at least one of two title's
available at the 2004 Eastern Canadians - as Alberton Sports skills
competition champions.

Coming a strong second is the host team, Murphy's Ultramar Athletics,
giving coach Dave Richards something to build confidence within his team as
they head to their final game Saturday at 1 p.m. against the Conception Bay
South Storm. The Storm will be going into the game off an 11 a.m. game with
East Hants High Tide, giving Alberton another piece of advantage in their game.

The semifinals are Sunday beginning at 9 a.m .withthechampionshipset for 3
p.m. between Game 19 winner (9 a.m.) and winner of game #20 (11 a.m.).

Action Saturday wraps up at the School field at 1 p.m. as it switches to
Memorial Park for games for the remainder of the weekend.
