GARDNERVILLE, NV.--The hard-hitting Reds (Oklahoma) survived a late scare in
the championship finals to capture the Indian National Tournament held in
Gardnerville, NV, Aug. 27-29, defeating The Tribe of Lake County, CA, 8-3 in
the "if needed" game Sunday night.
The Tribe, the surprise team of the tournament, forced the extra game by
handing the Reds their only loss of the tournament, 10-8, in the first
championship game, jumping off to a 10-0 lead and then hanging on against
the never-say-die Oklahoma team. Jerry Pinola, with relief help from Johnny
Wiseman, got the win.
After scoring the last eight runs in the first game, the Reds scored the
first six runs in the second game only to have The Tribe come back to close
to 6-3 before the Reds put them away with two runs in the fifth.
Earlier in the tournament, the Reds knocked The Tribe into the loser's
bracket with an 8-4 decision. They also defeated one of the pre-tournament
favorites, the defending champion Native Americans of Santa Rosa, CA, 14-13
in extra innings. rallying from a 9-4 deficit to tie the game at 9-9 in the
seventh. Each team scored in the eighth, and the Reds then scored four times
in to top of the ninth and held off a three-run comeback by the Natives in
the bottom of the inning.
The Natives, who compiled a glossy 27-1 record while winning both the
Tuesday and Wednesday Santa Rosa City Leagues, bounced back to beat Wally's
World (also of Santa Rosa) 18-1, but then ran into hard-throwing Sonny
Perkins of the Tribe South and lost 2-0 to be eliminated. Matt Smith, with
late-inning relief help from Chris Hamner, turned in a strong effort in a
losing cause for the Native Americans.
Perkins followed up his victory over the Native Americans with another
outstanding pitching performance against the Nightmares of British Columbia
but lost 1-0 on an unearned run in an elimination game early Sunday.
The Nightmares were then eliminated with a 4-2 loss to The Tribe of Lake
County.
Order of finish:
1. Reds (Oklahoma)
2. The Tribe (Lake County, CA).
3. Nightmares (British Columbia).
4. The Tribe South.
