Hitmen end Men's Nats with win over Halifax Keith's

By Pat Healey

ST. CROIX, N.S. - The Kinkora O'Shea's Pub and Eatery Hitmen ended their
2004 Canadian Senior Men's nationals on a high, topping the Halifax
Murphy's Fish and Chips Keith's 6-5 here late Thursday afternoon.

The game was a must win for the host Keith's to guarantee double life
through the playoffs, but with the loss their forced to play every game as
if it's their last.

Kinkora finished the Men's Nationals at 2-5, a respectable record for coach
Pat McIver.

"It was a successful tournament for us," McIver said in a phone interview
Thursday night from Halifax. "I couldn't ask for anymore from our guys.
They drained the tanks every night and poor Steve Langley threw his heart
out every game."

The Hitmen were in all their games, McIver noted, adding they lost three
one-run games with two of those being in extra innings.

"We were maybe three breaks away from having double life in the playoffs,"
he said. "We were in every single game. We competed hard."

Leading the Kinkora bats in the win over the Keith's was Jeff Ellsworth
(3-4, home run, three runs scored, two RBI), Steve Langley (2-3, four RBI),
Kevin Warren (1-3) and Darryl Yeo (1-3, run scored). Ellsworth, the
Alberton recreation director, finished the seven game tourney, batting
12-for-22 with a .545 batting average.

For the Keith's, Dwayne Miller (2-3, run scored) and Steve Jesso (1-4, two
RBI)were tops.

Gerald Muzielaar started for the Keith's before the Hitmen got to him,
roughing him up for five runs on seven hits, one walk and five strikeouts
in three innings work. Brian Urquhart, of Lantz, N.S., pitched an inning
allowing one run on one hit while fanning seven.

Langley went the complete game, allowing five runs - four earned - on six
hits, four walks and three strikeouts. The Trenton, N.S. thrower, who now
calls Moose Jaw, Sask., home and pitched with Fargo, N.D. at the ISC
Worlds, finished the tournament with 59 strikeouts.

McIver said he was disappointed at the Hitmen's early exit, but their
performance was second to none and showed the team came together in a short
period of time.

"I'm disappointed at the end result, but pleased with work ethic and how
everybody played," McIver said. "It was a great experience. Now every one
is chomping at the bit for next yr."...

In earlier action Thursday, the Saskatoon Black Sox rallied from a 2-1
deficit for a 3-2 win over Kinkora.

Leading the Hitmen was Jeff Ellsworth (3-4, two runs scored) and Kevin
Warren (1-3). Wade Smith (0-3, RBI) and Steve Langley (0-3, RBI) were tops
at the plate.
Tops for the Sask #2 entry was Keith MacKintosh (2-3, two runs scored), Pat
MacKintosh (2-3, runs scored, RBI) and Dean Holoien (1-3, RBI).
Winning pitcher was Bryan Newton who allowed one hit in two innings relief,
striking out three and walking one.
Losing pitcher Steve Langley went seven innings allowing three earned runs,
six hits, one walk and striking out nine.
