Nova Scotia, Ontario teams start strong

at Intermediate A Championships

By Pat Healey

The three Nova Scotia and two Ontario entries in the 2004 Linkletter Motel
Intermediate A Eastern Canadian championships had a strong day one pouring
in the runs on a wet and damp Very Important Volunteer Field in Summerside.

Blackburn Transport (NS 1) picked up a 4-1 win over Moncton Keith's (New
Brunswick) in a rain delayed first game to get off to a 1-0 start. No game
details were available. Blackburn was playing Sydney Cardinals in the
second last game of the day.

Other winners were the St. Mary's Gunners (Ont 2) used the bottom half of
the inning to their advantage in a 1-0 win over the MacLean Brothers
Sydney, N.S. Cardinals (NS 3) while the host Linkletter Motel Islanders
gave up three unearned runs in the bottom of the first before falling 7-0
in five innings to Halifax Tribe (NS 2).

In the game's second game, Robert Bernard for Sydney and Gunners' Steve
Cook gave up nine hits in seven solid innings as they ensured the fans
would see an interesting game, and that they did. St. Mary's had two
glorious chances to score with one out and the bases loaded in the fifth
and then runners on second and third in the sixth, but failed to cash them in.

That is until Mark Lindsay hit an RBI single with Ross Harold on second, to
score the game's only run.

Matt Reinhart (2-3, stolen base) and Dan Murrell (1-3) were the other top
batters for the Gunners.

For Sydney, Allan Gillis (1-2) and Russell Martin (1-3) were the only two
hits for the Cards.

Winning pitcher Steve Cook struck out eight while walking two. Losing
pitcher Robert Bernard gave up one run on seven hits, walked one and fanned
three.

BETTS PITCHES GEM, BUT LOSES

The host Islanders saw a wasted effort by Jamie Betts on the slab as three
miscues in the field gave the game away to the Tribe.

Two missed balls in the outfield by Hugh John McIver and a missed ball on
the infield by Robbie Gallant allowed Halifax to score four of their seven
runs - three of them in the first inning.

Leading Halifax at the dish was Matt Rodgers (2-3, run scored, three RBI),
Greg MacDonald (2-3, two runs scored, double, RBI), Geoff Jamieson (1-2,
double, RBI) and Wayne Rose (1-2, two runs scored, stolen base).

For the Islanders, Jamie Betts (1-2, double), Larry Gallant (1-1) and
player-coach Kevin Harvey (1-2) were the lone contributors.

Winning pitcher Adam Rodgers went five innings striking out six. Losing
pitcher Jamie Betts went four and a third innings allowing seven runs (four
earned) on nine hits, walking one and striking out three.

TEAM DROPS OUT

Due to the eighth team, Nova Scotia 4 (Glace Bay) dropping out and
informing tournament organizer Kevin Harvey ast midnight Friday of their
withdrawal, the schedule has been revised and teams are guaranteed just two
games before playoffs.

Action gets underway Saturday at 9 a.m. with the host Islanders looking for
their first official win (all teams were given a win who were set to face
Glace Bay as a forfeit) taking on Stouffville. Other games go at 11 a.m., 1
p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Awards will be presented Saturday night for round
robin achievements.

TOURNAMENT ALL WEEKEND

The tournament runs until 5 p.m. Saturday with playoffs and crossovers
Sunday leading to the Championship game at 3 p.m. If there is an undefeated
team, and they lose the final, there will be a second championship game
played immediately following the 3 p.m. game.

The final game of the day had the hot hitting Halifax Tribe (NS 2) battle
Ontario champs Stouffville Mennos at 7 p.m. No game details are available.
