Surprises on Day 2

@ Intermediate A Eastern Canadians

By Pat Healey

SUMMERSIDE - Surprises, surprises, surprises were the name of the game on
day two of the 2004 Linkletter Hotel Intermediate 'A' Eastern Canadian
Championships at VIV Field in Summerside.

Day two started out with the host Islanders having to win by seven to even
get into the semi finals, and they did that against favoured Stouffville
Mennos 7-0 in five innings thanks to a five run fourth innings.

The Islanders rallied after a two run blast off the stick of Brian Greenan,
scored him and Robin Hood of Charlottetown to make it 4-0, at which time
the Mennos decided to pull starter Terry Reesor in favour of Ryan Baranioski.

Linkletter had gotten out to a 2-0 lead on RBI singles in the first by
Kevin Harvey (1-3, run scored, double) and Hood (2-2, run scored, double).
Gerald Gallant (2-3, run scored, three RBI) was also a top batter for the
winners, who face Blackburn Transport at 11 a.m. Sunday.

For the Mennos, Chris Burkholter (1-2) was the only batter to hit a hot and
rolling Jamie Betts.

Winning pitcher Jamie Betts walked one and struck out four while losing
pitcher Reesor went three innings giving up four runs on five hits and
three strikeouts. Baranioski gave up three runs on two hits, one walk and
fanning two in an inning of relief.

MONCTON WINS TWICE

The Moncton Keith's picked up their two wins of the tournament in back to
back games, by taking out the Sydney Cardinals 4-1 before rallying for a
2-1 extra inning win over the St. Mary's Gunners (Ont. 2) thanks to a
two-run blast by round r0obin top batter Dan Hilche (8-11 in tournament play).

Leading the Keith's at the plate in the first game was Dan Hilche (3-3, run
scored, stolen base, RBI), Brad Cameron (1-3, two RBI) and Jeremy Arsenault
(2-3, run scored).

For Sydney, Kevin Pentecost (2-2, run scored) was tops at the plate for the
Cards.

Winning pitcher Brad Cameron went the distance while striking out five and
giving up six hits. Losing pitcher Robbie Bernard went six innings allowing
four runs on eight hits, and fanning nine batetrs.

Against the Gunners, Cam Strath and Steve Cook and Moncton's Brad Cameron
combined to pitch seven complete scoreless innings, before the sides
decided to cross the plate in extra innings. Matt Reinhart (2-3) brought
Matt Lindsay around from second on the extra inning tie breaker rule to
give St. Mary's a 1-0 lead.

That was before Dan Hilche came to bat and hit a towering walk-off two-run
blast to right centerfield to give the Keith's the 2-1 win in dramatic fashion.

Hilche (2-4, run scored), Bruno Gautreau (1-2), Doug Perkins (1-2) and Brad
Colpitts (2-3) were tops for Moncton.

GUNNERS WIN, BUT ELIMINATED BY ONE

The Gunners then played the Pat Slaunwhite-led Blackburn Transport of Nova
Scotia.

St. Mary's wnet into the game knowing they needed two runs to tie and
advance to the semi finals on Sunday.

The Gunners begun the game on the right track, plating Matt Reinhart (1-3)
in the bottom of the first of starter Darcy Blackburn. Blackburn lasted
just two and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits before being pulled
with the Gunners threatening for Pat Slaunwhite.

Slaunwhite, a Brookfield Elks starter, came on and shut the door going
three and three thirds innings allowing one hit, walking one and fanning
four, spoiling St. Mary's bid fora two-run win, and thus eliminating the
spunky, Gunners from further play at the tournament.

Dan Murrell (1-2, RBI), Jeff Vanvliet (1-2) and Kevin Thompson (1-2) also
contributed offensively for St. Mary's.

For Blackburn, John Mailman (1-2), Josh Slaunwhite (1-3) and Kenny Bennett
(1-2) led the attack.

Winning pitcher, andf top pitcher with a 0.00 era in round robin play, was
Scott Brickshaw who went the complete game, scattering a mere four hits
while striking out two.

Action continues SUNDAY at 9 a.m. as the top winners in each division
HALIFAX TRIBE and BLACKBURN TRANSPORT take each other on at 9 a.m. while at
11 am the host Linkletter Hotel Islanders will play the Moncton Keith's.
