Bradford, ON
After winning game 2 by a score of 4-1 Tuesday night, the Lake Simcoe
Lightning went in to Bradford for a third and deciding game on Thursday
with the number one team in the Oshawa City and District Softball
Association. First baseman John Zeiger got the Bolts on the board early
hitting a lead off homerun off Bradford pitcher Brad Bricknell. The Sox
rebounded in their half of the second inning when former Lightning team
mate John Kemp scored on a bloop hit to centre. The Lightning got things
rolling once again in the third when Zeiger leading off again hit a shot
high in to the netting in left field for another solo homerun, Shortstop
Todd Hamblin doubled up the middle and scored on a hit by Jeff Hanson.
Lake Simcoe fell apart in the fifth when manager Mark Fleming's line-up
change was deemed inadmissible, centre fielder Al Cox thinking he had been
pulled from the game removed his equipment and exited the game. After a
lengthy discussion with the home plate umpire the ruling was that Cox was
the player of record and had to enter the game. In his running shoes and a
borrowed glove Cox took the field only to have the first ball of the inning
hit right to him. What should have been a routine fly ball quickly turned
into a comedy of errors with the final result being a Sox runner on third.
The runner scored on a Kemp double and two batters later another ex
Lightning player, Will McElroy homered to right to make the score 4-3.
McElroy would supply the insurance run in the sixth scoring Kemp once
again, this time on a sacrifice fly. Rick May pitched 6 full innings taking
the loss while Bradford's Brad Bricknell went the distance and with the win
send the Sox on to a semi final showdown with the Claremont Rebels
This marks the end of the season for the Lightning, after getting off to a
slow start they finished with some rather modest success. Highlights of the
season included being 'A' finalists in the Huntsville tournament and a
fourth place finish at the OASA's in Wiarton. The team played against 6
teams this year that at one point or another were ranked in the top 10 in
Ontario, going a collective 3 and 4 against them including a mercy rule win
over the number one ranked Stouffville Mennos. Catcher Matt Osborne
finished in the top 10 in league batting, batting over .350 for the year
and Pitcher Rick May finished first in the league in strike outs whiffing
over a hundred opposing batters.
