Mitchell, ON
The first night of the three-day South Perth Men's Fastball League 16-team
playoff tournament basically went according to hoyle Friday night in
Mitchell's Keterson Park, as four of the six higher seeded teams were
victorious in the double-knockout tournament. As predicted, however, the
games for the most part were close, hard-fought affairs.
The #1 seed Sebringville Sting opened the tournament with a 7-0, six-inning
mercy rule win over Shakespeare Colts, while the #3 seed, Mitchell Mets,
were knocked off 5-4 in 8-innings by the 14th seeded Waterloo Hallman Jr.
Twins in an up and down game which saw the Twins lead 2-0 after 5 1/2, only
to see the Mets tie the game in the bottom of the 6th. In the 7th, the Mets
threw out a runner at the plate on an outstanding defensive play by second
baseman Joe Harris, while in the bottom of the inning, the Twins escaped a
no-out, bases loaded jam when Ryan French induced a home-to-first double
play, and enticed a lineout to center, forcing extra innings. In the 8th,
the Twins scored three runs - all with 2-out - to apply pressure, but
losing pitcher Kevin Gettler helped bring the Mets closer with a two-run
inside-the-park home run. It wasn't close enough, though, as it turned out.
Pitcher Jamie Simpson and the Linwood Chiefs, the #10 seed, whipped the
Millbank Jr. AW Millwrights (seeded #7) 9-0 in 5-innings.
In other action, #8 Elmira Midgets edged their crosstown expansion rivals,
Elmira Cubs, 3-1 Friday, while #5 Tavistock Merchants scored four runs in
the first, added three more in the third, to cruise to a 7-2 win over the
Monkton Muskrats (#12). Finally, in another extra-inning affair, the
Shakespeare Falcons almost knocked off the #4 seeded Breslau KJ Sox, but
the veteran Sox got a two-run single from Mike Pinder in the bottom of the
8th to win 3-2. The Falcons tied the game 1-1 in the 7th, then took their
first lead in the top of the 8th only to have Breslau battle back.

taking on the Elora/St. Marys victor.
Games on the loser's side of the double-knockout event will also take place
all day Saturday, with the final games of the evening set for 8 p.m.
Six and possibly seven games will be played Sunday when the 2004 champion
will be crowned.
