Mitchell, ON
The Sebringville Sting won their third South Perth Men's Fastball League
championship in the past four years Sunday, winning two more games and
record five straight victories all told in capturing top honours.
The Sting, the #1 seed after finishing with a 21-5 regular season record,
edged Bridgeport 2-1 in 8-innings in the semi-final, then snapped a 2-2 tie
in the fifth with a four-run frame, keyed by a three-run home run by Brian
Stere, to turn back the Tavistock Merchants 9-2 and win the championship.
Tavistock, who lost 7-0 to Sebringville Saturday night, reeled off three
straight wins Sunday to reach the final of the double-knockout tournament,
and faced the daunting task of beating the Sting twice to win their
first-ever championship. Sebringville, behind the pitching of Don Scott,
proved too strong. Tavistock opened the day with an 11-1 rout of the Elmira
Cubs, then followed that with a 1-0 nailbiter over Linwood before stunning
Bridgeport 3-2 as they scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to
battle back from a 2-1 deficit.
In the final, Scott went the distance and allowed just five hits, striking
out 10 in the process. The 30-year-old fireballer didn't lose a game in the
tournament, and paired with lefty Todd Winkworth proved a formidable
pitching duo. For his efforts, Scott was named the tournament's top pitcher.
Dave Ashkanese, an 18-year-old midget-aged pitcher, suffered the loss for
the Merchants.
But Sebringville is not just pitching. Their offensive effort saw them win
three of their five games by mercy rule, including the final, keyed by
lead-off batter Derek Shackleton, who was named the tournament MVP. Dale
Levy, batting third, and Stere at clean-up, gave the Sting a powerful
offensive sting.
Sunday's results:
Game #25 - Tavistock 11, Elmira Cubs 1
Game #26 - Linwood 5, Hickson 1
Game #27 - Sebringville 2, Bridgeport 1 (8-inn)
Game #28 - Tavistock 1, Linwood 0
Game #29 - Tavistock 3, Bridgeport 2
Game #30 - Sebringville 9, Tavistock 2
Congratulations also to Jim Green, president of the South Perth Men's
Fastball League, who was presented with the St. Marys Journal-Argus trophy
for longtime commitment, sportsmanship and dedication to the game of fastball.
