Twins, Storm, Hitmen open fast pitch
Ch'ship with victories

By Pat Healey

The Summerside Greco Twins, St. Louis Storm and Kinkora Hitmen each opened
the 2004 Source for Sports Men's fast pitch league year-end championship
with victories Friday night.
All games were played at Queen Elizabeth Park's Very Important Volunteer
Field in Summerside.
The Twins toppled the Wellington Arsenault Sawmill Jacks 11-3 on the
strength of three long balls; St. Louis used the solid pitching of Jon
Broderick to shut down the Alberton Arms Pub Athletics 1-0 in an upset, and
in the final game of the day, the Kinkora Hitmen exploded for six runs in
the fourth and fifth innings as they pulled away from the Moase Plumbing
and Heating Midgets 8-0.
In the tournament's opening game, the Twins used the big powerful stick of
Ian Power (2-4, two home runs, four RBI, two runs scored), en route to
their win.
Other top offensive contributors were Scott Bridges (2-2, two runs scored,
walk), Todd Richard (2-3, two RBI, run scored) and Shannon Ellis (1-3,
two-run home run, run scored).
For the Jacks, Gerald Gallant (2-3, run scored, RBI), Moe Cormier (2-2, run
scored, double) and Jamie Caissie (1-2, run scored) were tops at the plate.
Winning pitcher Scott Bridges went five strong innings, allowed three runs
on five hits, and struck out three. Losing pitcher Neil Arsenault went 3
2/3 innings, and gave up seven runs on eight hits, walked two and sat down
three on strikes. Jamie Perry came in and pitched 1 1/3 innings, and
allowing four runs in relief.
STORM UPSETS ATHLETICS
There may have been no more major wins this season for the St. Louis Storm
then the one they got Friday night.
The Storm used the top notch pitching of Jon Broderick and some mental
lapses by the Athletics to pull out a 1-0 win in a very entertaining game.
Leading the Storm at the dish was Jamie Betts (2-4, game winning run,
double), Shane Costain (1-4, RBI), Jon Broderick (1-2, walk) and Larry
Gallant (1-3).
For Alberton, who put the ball in play but couldn't capitalize with men in
scoring position, it was Jeff Ellsworth (3-3, two doubles, walk), Chris
Avery (3-3), Jason Milligan (1-1) and Kyle Fraser (2-4).
The highlight of the game came when Brian Greenan made a sharp throw to
catcher Mitch Turner to nail Kyle Fraser at home trying to score the tying
run from second base for the third and final out of the game.
Winning pitcher Jon Broderick went the distance, scattered 11 hits, walked
one and fanned seven. Losing pitcher Mitch Hardy also had a complete game.
He allowed one run on six hits, whiffed 12 and walked two.
HITMEN ERUPT
The Moase Plumbing and Heating Midgets held the Kinkora O'Sheas Pub and
Eatery Hitmen in check for four innings, before the Hitmen exploded for six
runs in the next two innings to walk out with a 8-0 win.
The story of the game was Kevin Warren who fanned 16 of the 20 batters he
faced, and didn't give up a hit until Pierre Richard hit a fifth-inning
single for the Midgets' first and only hit of the game.
Kinkora scored once in the third and fourth to go up 2-0, despite Pierre
Richard's solid pitching, as he got the side out in the first two innings,
before his defence let him down.
Leading Kinkora, who managed just five hits of the Wellington native, was
Craig Manuel (2-3, home run, two runs scored, three RBI), Matt Dawson (2-3,
run scored, RBI) and Wade Smith (1-4, RBI).
Warren went six innings, yielded one hit, one walk and struck out 16
batters. Losing pitcher Pierre Richard threw six innings of five-hit ball,
gave up four walks and struck out six.
The league championship tournament continues Saturday with the Midgets
opening the day at 10 a.m. against the Wellington Jacks.
