Twins Power to fast pitch league championship

SUMMERSIDE - It was a battle between David and Goliath Sunday afternoon in
the 2004 Source for Sports Men's Fast Pitch League Championship final at
Queen Elizabeth Park's Very Important Volunteer Field.

And David, in this case the Summerside Greco Twins, came out on top over
Goliath, the favoured Alberton Arms Pub Athletics 5-2 in the final, before
a crowd of about 200 fans Sunday afternoon.

Each team took different routes to advance to the final.

The Twins finished fourth overall, and lost Saturday night in a nine inning
affair to the St. Louis Storm. Alberton meanwhile cake walked past the
Kinkora O'Sheas Pub and Eatery Hitmen 8-0 to set up a meeting of the same
four teams Sunday morning.

Sunday's first game between the Storm and Twins was a very different game
then the extra inning game, with Joseph MacDougall scoring the eventual
game winning run on a Darryl Yeo single in the second inning of a 2-1 win.
Todd Richard (1-3) drove in Robert Perry with the Twins' first run.

Meanwhile, the A's shocked the 2003 defending league champion Hitmen for
the second straight day, giving them two losses in a row, with a 5-0
decision in the second semifinal on the back of Mitch Hardy's complete game
two-hitter, walking six and striking out eight.

In the final, the Athletics got on the board with the second batter of the
game when Jeff Ellsworth (0-3) hit an inside the park home run ball that
was misplayed by leftfielder Joseph MacDougall, and it bounced off his
glove under him and almost to the fence, allowing Ellsworth, who was on his
horses rounding the bags, to score.

MacDougall made up for his miscue in the outfield in the sixth when he sent
a towering ball out of the park to make it 5-1 at that point. He was
2-for-3 at the plate in the game.

Summerside bounced back in their half of the inning when Darryl Yeo
reached, then went to third on an error by the A's infield. Ian Power then
reached base, and Scott Bridges drove Power home to give the Twins a 2-1
lead, a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Alberton tried to rally in the seventh when Jeff Ellsworth hit a towering
fly ball with the bases loaded and one out to centre that Daryl Yeo caught
at the fence, keeping it in the ball park and allowing just Chad Rennie to
score on the tag up. Troy Ellsworth flew out to end the game.

Tournament MVP Scott Bridges shut down the A's attempt to rally from that
point forward, striking out six, allowing just five hits and walking two.

Leading the Twins was Power (3-3, two runs scored, RBI) and Yeo (3-4, two
runs scored, two singles).

For Alberton, Kyle Fraser (2-3, walk), Ritchie Profit (1-3), Chad Rennie
(1-2, double, runs scored) and Troy Ellsworth (1-3) were tops.

Losing pitcher Mitch Hardy went six innings, allowing eight hits, walking
one and fanning seven.

SEMIFINALS WERE THRILLING

All four teams provided the close to 250 fans who were in attendance for
the semifinals with thrilling and entertaining ball.

In the first semi final, MacDougall (1-3), Daryl Yeo (2-4, RBI), Todd
Richard (1-3) and Robert Perry (1-2, walk) led Sumemrside.

For the Storm, Mitch Turner (2-3, RBI), Joey Chaisson (2-3), Shane Costain
91-2, walk, run scored) powered the offence.

Winning pitcher Scott Bridges went the distance, yielding one run on nine
hits, walking two and striking out none. Losing pitcher Jon Broderick, who
headed back to University in Halifax, N.S. following the game, went seven
innings, allowing two runs on just a mere five hits, walking one and
sitting down five batters.

In the other semifinal, the A's went into the game with confidence
following their surprising win less then 17 hours earlier over the Hitmen.

Alberton got the ball rolling early, scoring three times of a shaky Craig
Manuel, to take a 3-0 lead and never looked back en route to the shutout win.

Leading Alberton at the dish was Troy Ellsworth (2-3, two runs scored,
RBI), Jeff Ellsworth (2-3, RBI, runs scored), Chris Avery (1-3, RBI) and
Erroll Kinch (1-2, run scored).

Kevin Warren was the only batter to get a bead off Mitch Hardy picking up
two hits in four trys.

Hardy went the distance walking six and fanning eight. Losing pitcher Craig
Manuel went six innings, allowing five runs on nine hits, no walks and
fanning six.

In action Saturday night, the Storm carried momentum from a 2-0 record into
their third and final round robin game against the Summerside Twins.

KEY SATURDAY RESULTS

In what turned out to be a seesaw affair, lasting nine innings, the Storm
prevailed to go to 3-0 and would eventually clinch first in the round robin.

times before pulling out the 5-4 win, was Brian Greenan (1-4, game winning
run scored), Mitch Turner (3-4, two singles, home run, run scored), Jon
Broderick (2-5, RBI, game winning double to right field scored Greenan from
first with winning run) and Larry Gallant (2-3).

For the Twins, Daryl Yeo (2-5, two runs scored, RBI), Ian Power (3-4, two
RBI) and Dale MacDougall (1-3, run scored).

Winning pitcher was Jon Broderick who pitched two-thirds of an inning
allowing one hit in relief of Jamie Betts. Betts went eight and one-third
innings allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits, walking two and
striking out six.

Losing pitcher Scott Bridges went the complete game, allowing five runs on
nine hits, and striking out four.

Against the Hitmen, Alberton scored one in the second and two more in the
third and never looked back en route to their regular season nemesis 8-0.

RBI), Kyle Fraser (2-3, two runs scored), Adam Boudreault (1-2, home run)
and Chris Avery (1-3, double, RBI).

For the Hitmen, Peter McCardle (1-2) and Hugh John McIver (1-2) were the
only batters to hit Hardy.

Hardy went six innings allowing just two hits, walked two and fanned seven.

runs on nine hits, four walks and seven strikeouts.
