The Aurora Leghorns took the very important first game of the deciding
series by a 1-0 score over the Claremont Rebels in another of a long list
of pitching battles in this year's Oshawa City and District League play-offs.
As remarkable as it may seem, the game took one hour and nine minutes to play!
Winning pitcher was Todd Martin, who gave up five hits and walked two. He
struck out 11 and helped his own cause by fielding his position well with 3
assists. The shutout was his third straight (all by 1-0 scores) and
increased his consecutive runless inning streak to 28 and his overall
play-off record to 4-0.
Losing pitcher was hard-throwing southpaw Paul Koert who matched Martin
pitch for pitch. Koert, who pitches for Heflin in the ISC, scattered 3
hits and walked one. He struck out 13 over his 6 innings of work and only
had 2 balls leave the infield.
The game's only run was scored in the bottom of the second, when cleanup
hitter George Karkambasis led off with a walk.
He rumbled to second on a wild pitch and came home on an RBI triple off of
the bat of 1st baseman Dean Begley.
The Rebels made things interesting in the top of the 7th when the first
batter, Jason Yoshida, knocked an 0-2 pitch into left-centre for a leadoff
double. Scott Goff then singled to right which moved Yoshida to
third. After Goff swiped second base, Martin bore down and struck out the
bottom third of the order.
Evan Boyd, Chris Jones, and Martin Humphries had the other Rebel hits.
Rick Green and Ed Hare also had hits for Aurora.
Game two will be in Claremont on Wednesday October 6.
