Doreen Dalton tournament chance to shine for Black Sox hopefuls
Wednesday October 20th
Fraser Park in Lower Hutt will be the stage for players to shine this
weekend at the annual Doreen Dalton premier one men's softball tournament.
The annual tournament will be a chance for players to impress before New
Zealand Community Trust Black Sox coach Eddie Kohlhase names his extended
train on squad. While Kohlhase won't be in attendance at the tournament
selectors will be on hand to monitor the form of players.
Tournament organiser Brent Dalton says ten teams are confirmed for the
three days of softball with the teams being split into two sections for
round robin play before a top four playoff. Play starts on Saturday
morning and runs through to the final on Monday afternoon.
The defending champions are Hutt Valley Cardinals and they will be back
this weekend along with host team Hutt City United, Miramar and Poneke
Kilbirnie. Top sides travelling to the tournament include Ramblers from
Auckland and North Harbour based Northcote.
Also taking part in the tournament will be Nelson, Porirua, Giants from
Wairarapa and Hutt Valley Dodgers. After round robin play the top four
sides will play off for the Doreen Dalton title while the remaining sides
will contest the plate section.
In another feature of the tournament this weekend the national under 19
boy's coach Mark Sorenson has requested that some of his young pitchers
from the New Zealand under 19 boy's team be included in some of the sides
as they continue their preparations for the world championships next year.
With many of the top club sides from around the country contesting the
title Dalton says there will be a number of the world championship winning
Black Sox involved and he is expecting a lot of tight and exciting softball.
"This is a main stream top of the range tournament for premier one men's
teams," said Dalton.
