Blakely a hit with U of Ottawa softball team
As the captain of the team, Jen Blakely is proud of the team and is looking
forward to the championships.

----------
Crouched behind home plate, Jen Blakely surveys the field. Guiding her
pitcher with cues on what to throw, she keeps an attentive eye on the base
runners and is ready for anything from the batter.

Scott Searle says Ms. Blakely is a real leader on the womens' softball team
he coaches and that leadership quality hasn't gone unnoticed by her
teammates either.

She was voted the team captain this season. "It was an honour to be chosen
to represent the team," said Ms. Blakely. This Barrhaven native has been
the catcher for the University of Ottawa softball team since it started
three seasons ago.

For the first two seasons she was the only catcher and while that
guaranteed her a spot on the field every inning, it also left her with the
pressure of knowing that she had important cleats to fill.

"I had to be ready every weekend and for four or five games over two days.
It was physically challenging but I enjoyed being such a big part of the
team and so involved in the games," she said.

This year the team has two new catchers which alleviates some of Ms.
Blakely's responsibilities but she still gets her share of plate time and
game highlights.

"This season Jen caught in the league's first perfect game," said coach
Searle.

Erica Chan was the pitcher in the record-making game and coach Searle said,
"Jen and Erica work really well together."....
