Miramar convincing Doreen Dalton champions

Monday October 25th

Consistent power hitting has seen Miramar take out the Doreen Dalton
premier one men’s softball title at Fraser Park, Lower Hutt today.

Miramar took out the final over host team Hutt City United this afternoon
in a convincing manner 7-0 with the mercy rule invoked in the fifth innings.

Pitcher Craig Gibson was a star with both the bat and the ball for Miramar.
On the mound Gibson faced 19 batters giving up just three hits while taking
six strikeouts. With the bat in hand he was just as strong from three trips
to the plate Gibson picked up two hits and two RBI’s.

Miramar took the early advantage in the final with one run in the top of
the second inning when designated runner Carone Conroy on base for Paul
Luka scored on a drive by Gibson to left field.

The scoring continued in the top of the third when Damian McCulloch
scampered home on an error in the HCU field. Miramar wrapped up the game in
the top of the fifth inning when they put together a rally with two down
and scored five runs.

McCulloch, Wayne Laulu, Stephen Ratu, Conroy and Aaron Neemia all scored in
the fifth inning to douse any hopes HCU may have had of making a comeback.

After such a dominant run in the fifth HCU went into bat in the bottom of
the inning knowing they had to pick up at least one run to keep the game
alive. They couldn’t manage it though with Gibson striking out the first
three HCU batters to win the game.

On the mound for HCU was Jeremy Manley who faced 26 batters giving up seven
runs, seven hits and taking four strikeouts.

Going into the game both sides had already played three games earlier in
the day and after Miramar scored first they were always in a commanding
position.

Victorious Miramar coach Les Flint was a happy man after the game believing
his side had got on a role earlier in the day and kept it going through the
semi final and final.

“We clicked really well today; of the last six tournaments we have played
in we have won four so the team is starting to achieve their goals. It is
nice to win a major tournament,” said Flint.

Looking forward to the announcement shortly of the New Zealand Community
Trust Black Sox training squad Flint believes his side’s victory today can
only do his players chances good.

“We have got some really talented players in the team and to win this
tournament can only be good for them.”

Miramar was on a role going into the final having easily dismissed Poneke
Kilbirnie in the semi final 7-0 in five innings with the mercy rule invoked.

While Miramar were comprehensive in the semis HCU had a real battle on
their hands just to make the final. They overcame Mt Albert Ramblers 3-2
with the game going to a tie breaker before HCU came out on top.

In the plate section of the tournament Porirua were the winners overcoming
Nelson in the final 6-3.
