Young talent on show at Saints Premier 1 women's tournament
Wednesday October 27th
The Saints premier one women's tournament at Fraser Park, Lower Hutt this
weekend will be a chance for many young players to test themselves at the
top grade.
There will be eight teams taking part in the tournament with all sides
coming from the Wellington and Hutt Valley club competitions.
Tournament organiser Naomi Shaw says due to the delayed start to the season
the three day event will be more like a pre season hit out as some sides
are still to play a competition game this season.
Poneke Kilbirnie are the defending champions and Shaw is expecting them to
be very strong once again. The have retained many of their New Zealand
Community Trust White Sox players such as Kiri Shaw, Api Stone O'Kane,
Talilotu Tonu'u and the Lote sisters Upu and Togi.
With such impressive names to call on and plenty of power hitting in their
line up it will take a mighty effort for anyone to upset them.
Shaw is expecting to see a lot of new faces at the tournament with many
teams having the unknown factor as they are still to reveal their line ups.
Saints have picked up a pitcher from the West Coast, Sheryl Remnant for the
tournament. Shaw says Remnant was identified as part of the New Zealand
Softball pitching clinics so it will be interesting to see how she shapes
up during the tournament.
Another side to secure new pitching services for the tournament are Te
Aroha, former Waikato National League pitcher Victoria Reyland will be on
the mound for the 2003/04 national club champions.
The eight teams have been split into two sections of four for round robin
play before the top four playoffs. Facing off in section A will be PK, Te
Aroha, Royals and Hutt City United. Section B sees Miramar, Cardinals,
Saints and Johnsonville taking each other on. Games start on Friday night
with the final scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
