Team Canada splits games on first day of University Championships
(Ottawa, ON) Canada is competing in the first ever World University
Championships which are taking place in Plant City, Florida from October
26-31, 2004. Team Canada debuted the championship with a loss to Chinese
Taipei, 5-1 but a come from behind victory over Japan 5-3.
The competition looks very tight, stated Head Coach Noreen Murphy. We
were extremely happy with the performance of the players against Japan and
their ability to come together as a team in the 7th inning to steal the
win, added Murphy.
In their first game, Canada jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the
first inning. British Columbias Melanie Matthews singled and, advanced
home on a sacrifice bunt and a pair of illegal pitches. Their opponents
roared back with 3 runs in the bottom half of the first and scored 2 more
in the 6th for a 5-1 victory. B.C.s pitchers took the mound. Cathy
Andrijaszyn pitched 5 1/3 innings for Canada, giving up 5 runs on 5 hits
and B.Cs Megan MacKenzie pitched the final 2/3 inning. Matthews had 2
hits for Canada, while Erin Gee from B.C., Cari Irwin from B.C. and
Québecs Noémie Marin each had one hit a piece.
Canada 5 vs Japan 3
Canadas second game was a pitching dual for the first 5
innings. Manitobas Katie Rosentreter shut down Team Japan. Canada was
unable to solve the Japanese pitching until the 6th inning. Japan opened
the scoring in the bottom of the 6th with two runs. Canada made a pitching
change and Manitobas Sarah Belanger came into the game in relief to get
Canada out of the inning.
Canada then staged a dramatic comeback scoring 5 runs in the top of the
7th. Ontarios Cambria McKay singled and was replaced by pinch runner Cari
Irwin from B.C.. Noémie Marin singled and B.C.s Shannon Rossiter walked
to load the bases. Rossiter was replaced by pinch runner Tiffany Patteson
from Ontario. Manitobas Katy Van Deveire entered the game as a pinch
hitter and was walked which forced Irwin to score. Marin was forced out at
home on a Janiva Willis ground ball. A Japanese throwing error allowed
Patteson to score and tie the game. Melanie Matthews then singled to drive
in Van Deveire and B.C.s Tamra Howren singled to drive in
Willis. Matthews then scored on Japans 2nd error of the inning to put
Canada up 5-2. Japan responded but only managed to score one run in the
bottom of the 7th.
Megan MacKenzie pitched the final inning and allowed 1 run on 2 hits and
struck out 1. Sarah Belanger earned the win and MacKenzie picked up the
save. Defensively for Canada, Short Stop Noémie Marin engineered two
double plays and Janiva Willis made a great diving catch in centre field.
