The Fall Classic: Gee-Gee Style
By Nick Taylor-Vaisey
On a Sunny fall Sunday morning, the defending champion women's fastball
team took to the field against the University of Western Ontario Mustangs
to play for a bronze medal in the Ontario Intercollegiate Women's Fastpitch
Association (OIWFA).
The team's performance at the tournament, which took place on Oct. 23-24,
was a dissapointing way to finish the season, as the Gee-Gees were expected
to defend their Ontario Championship. However, the team lost the bronze
medal game against Western to finish 4th in the eight-team tournament.
"Being one of the top teams and defending champion, its hard for the girls
to get excited about playing for the bronze medal," said Gee Gees coach Gil
Read. "Its hard to explain how (losing these games) can happen, really in
any sport."
The morning started with a loss to the Windsor Lancers in the
semi-final. Having lost this game, the team started the game against
Western feeling a little stunnded. Gee Gee Lindsey Hutton started the
pitching for the game for the Gee Gees, facing off against strong Western
pitching from Jen Lukas. Hutton and Lukas were dominant early on, with
Hutton racking up strikeouts against the top of the Western batting order.
The Gee Gees tried a different strategy against Lukas, relentlessly bunting
the ball and forcing Western to adopt a defensive strategy that left no
room for errors. Although they managed a couple of baserunners in the
early going, none of the Gee Gees could capitalize on these opportunities.
Lukas baffled the Gee Gees at the playe inning after inning and the Gee
Gees were unable to generate any offence. Western scored a run in the
third inning to take the lead and they never looked back.
In the fourth inning, Gee Gee Ashley Sands came in to pitch allowing no
runs over the pair of innings she pitched. In the sixth inning, with Erica
Chan pitching, Western was able to cement their victory after they scored
three runs.
"The bats went cold," said Gee Gees assistant coach Scott Searle said of
the team's play Sunday. "We played a couple of excellent games yesterday
after a loss to Brock, but (we) couldnt get it going today."
Lukas pitched a complete game shutout against the Gees, securing the most
valuable player award for Western, while Jessica Prot was named MVP for the
Gee Gees.
