Japan ends Canada’s playoff run at World University Game

(Ottawa, ON) Canada’s World University Team came up short in their first
playoff game at the World University Games in Plant City, Florida. Canada
lost to Japan 3-1 in sudden death playoff action this evening. Canada
settles for 4th place while Japan moves on to play the loser of the game
between Chinese Taipei vs USA in the bronze medal game.

Head Coach Noreen Murphy said: “I was proud of our crew and how they came
together over the course of the tournament and how we took the game to
another level. We were all disappointed with the outcome and the call on
the outcome but there were many great positives that came out of this
tournament.”

The game remained scoreless until the 4th inning when Japan got their first
two runs in what appeared to be a challenging call by the umpire. In the
4th, Canada’s Katie Rosentreter walked two batters. Then on a sacrifice
bunt, both runners advanced. The next batter hit a little blooper over 3rd
base just along the foul line which allowed both runners to score. Short
stop Noémie Marin dove to catch the ball but the umpire called it fair and
both runs were scored. Canada responded in the 5th inning when Janiva
Willis went over the left field fence for a homerun to give Canada their
one and only run.

Canada’s Katie Rosentreter was the losing pitcher pitching 5 innings,
giving up 3 earned runs on 4 hits, 4 walks and 2 strikeouts. Tamra Howren
was Canada’s Catcher. Sarah Belanger threw the last 2 innings giving up 2
hits and striking out 2 batters.
