Canada throws a perfect game at World University Championships
(Ottawa, ON) Canada beat China 4-0 and Guatemala 10-0 in the
second day at the World University Championships which are taking
place in Plant City, Florida. Canada threw a 2-hitter against
China and a no-hitter against Guatemala to secure two more wins.
In the last three games, I felt we handled the competition well
and beat the teams that we had to beat, stated Head Coach Noreen
Murphy. The team is pumped and ready to meet Australia and
USAtomorrow.
In Canadas first game today, they defeated China 4-0, even despite
the fact that China threw their Olympic Pitcher. Canada put
itself on the scoreboard in the 2nd inning. Noémie Marin from
Québec singled and Manitobas Katie Rosentreter sacrificed to
send Marin to 2nd. New Brunswicks Janiva Willis hit a ground
ball and on the short stops overthrow to first, Marin went home
to score Canadas first run. In the 5th, Willis hit an infield
single and advanced to 2nd on yet another overthrow to first.
Then Ontarios Tiffany Patteson sacrificed and Willis beat the
throw at 3rd. B.C.s Melanie Matthews singled to score Willis.
Manitobas Katy Van Deveire hit a nice bunt to load the bases.
On a forced play, Ontarios Cambria McKay stepped up and hit
a grounder to 3rd. The third base muffled the ball and on her
attempt to throw home hit Tiffany Patteson in the back as she
was running to home plate. Patteson scored and the ball then
hit the back screen and Melanie Matthews ran all around the bases
and scored. China had one ball hit to the outfield the entire
game.
Hits came from Melanie Matthews, Noémie Marin, Janiva Willis,
Katy Van Deveire. Runs came from Noémie Marin, Janiva Willis,
Melanie Matthews and Tiffany Patteson (RBI).
Katie Rosentreter threw a great game and mixed the balls well.
She threw a 2-hitter game throughout 7 innings, had 4 strikeouts
and 1 walk. B.C.s Tamra Howren was Canadas Catcher.
