DEFENDING CHAMPS LOOKING TO USE HOME ADVANTAGE
Monday December 20th

Rotorua took a few teams by surprise last season as they claimed the
2003/04 Men’s National Provincial title but there will be no such
assistance this time around.

With the help of Black Sox pitcher Karl Gollan, Rotorua upset more fancied
sides such as Wellington and Hutt Valley to claim the title and give the
sport of softball a real boost in the region.

While Rotorua won’t have the surprise factor in their favour this time they
will have home advantage with the tournament to be played at Rotorua
International Stadium from December 27th 30th.

Jimmy Natana coach of Rotorua says the team is really focussed on defending
the title in front of a home crowd.

“We have a good team including some of the guys form last year and the home
advantage could be a real boost,” said Natana.

Looking ahead to the tournament Natana believes strong hitting is going to
win the tournament and he will be looking to his experienced players such
as Shane Hunuhunu, Vaughan Grey and Jason Gerbes to lead the team. Rotorua
have also been boosted by the inclusion of Canterbury based New Zealand
under 19 pitcher Penese Iosefo for the tournament.

“The four main centres Wellington, Hutt Valley, Auckland and North Harbour
are all ranked one, two, three and four and we are ranked five so we are
gunning for them and will concentrate on what they are doing.”

Top seed for the tournament is Wellington who was beaten by Rotorua in the
final last season. Leading the attack for the team from the capital will be
pitchers David Gollan, Shaun Foster and Craig Gibson and they will be
backed up by power hitters Aaron Neemia, Wayne Laulu and Chris Eden-Huria.

Other features of the team lists are the inclusion of Black Sox pitchers
Marty Grant and Jarrad Martin in the two lowest ranked sides. Grant will
play for Western Bay of Plenty while Otago will benefit from the services
of Martin on the mound.

Players will have plenty of reasons to impress as new Black Sox coach Eddie
Kohlhase will be in attendance throughout the tournament. Kohlhase will be
naming the Black Sox team for the Evodrive Pacific Cup Series on January 3rd.
