Defending champs show early form at women’s NPC

Wellington look to be in ominous form after the first day of
play in theNew Zealand Community Trust women’s National Provincial
Cup at HataitaiPark in Wellington.

Making full use of home advantage Wellington started the tournamentstrongly
opening up with a convincing 11-1 victory over Western Bay ofPlenty
and then repeating the score line later in the day as theydefeated
Auckland.

Wellington are the defending champions and look like they will
be toughto beat as they try and match the feats of the Wellington
men’s team whotook out the men’s NPC title just last week.

The defending champions were not the only team to perform well
today asSouthland went through the first day unbeaten with wins
over Nelson 5-1and Hawkes Bay 6-0.

Another side to start strong was Counties Manukau who upset nearneighbours
Auckland 1-0 and then defeated Rotorua 2-0.

The biggest upset of the day came in the final round as the number
oneseeds in section two Hutt Valley was beaten by Waikato 9-8.

Tomorrow will be a key day for Hutt Valley as they look to keep
theirtitle hopes alive. They have key games against the unbeaten
Southland andHawkes Bay and will need two victories to get their
campaign back ontrack.

Another interesting match up tomorrow will see the two unbeaten
sides insection one Wellington and Counties Manukau facing off.
