Southerners blast off at women's NPC
Monday January 3rd 2005

The team from the deep south, Southland have gone into overdrive on day two
of the New Zealand Community Trust womens National Provincial Cup at
Hataitai Park, Wellington today.

With New Zealand Community Trust White Sox pitcher Sheree Cartwright
leading the way for Southland they have been hard to stop as they scored 27
runs over two games while conceding just two.

First up Southland dismissed Waikato in the early game today 15-0 and then
backed that up with a convincing 12-2 win over Hutt Valley in the final
round of games on day two.

Southland were always going to be a team to watch at this tournament as
they boast a side full of hitting power and young talent. On the back of
today's results the southerners lead section two with and unbeaten record
and look to be in a good position for the start of the playoffs late tomorrow.

In section one the home team Wellington are leading the way also with an
unbeaten record. Today they overcame Counties Manukau 6-0 and are showing
strong form as they look to defend the title they won last year.

Section play rounds up tomorrow before the top two teams from each section
move on the top four final series at 5.30pm while the remaining five teams
fight it out for the lower placings.

There have been a lot of high scores on day one of the New Zealand
Community Trust under 19 boy's championships at Fraser Park, Lower Hutt today.

Defending champions Auckland started the tournament strongly with an
impressive 10-1 victory over Waikato and then they backed that up with
victories over Nelson and Wellington. Leading the way for the bat for
Auckland were Daniel Lamb-Hunt and Bernard Hale.

In the first game against Waikato Hale picked up three hits from three at
bats with a double and triple and an automatic. Lamb-Hunt was just as good
with three hits from four at bats against Waikato.

Also hitting well on day one was Canterbury who convincingly beat Nelson
22-2 in their first game of the tournament. Penese Iosefo was a power house
with the bat for the red and black team with three hits from four trips to
the plate including two automatic home runs.

Home team Hutt Valley have also started well with a tight 7-6 victory over
near neighbours backed up by a 7-3 win over the Southern Regions side.
