Wellington book finals spot at women’s NPC
Tuesday January 4th 2005

The defending champions Wellington are the first team to book a place in
the final of the New Zealand Community Trust women’s National Provincial Cup.

Wellington the top qualifiers from section one won their way through to the
final with a convincing 7-1 victory over Hawkes Bay the number one
qualifier from section two at Hataitai Park, Wellington today.

Who Wellington will meet in the final is still to be decided with playoffs
continuing tomorrow morning between the top four sides.

In the early game tomorrow Counties Manukau will play Southland with the
loser dropping out of contention. The winner goes on to play Hawkes Bay for
the right to play Wellington in the final at 2pm.

Wellington are the only unbeaten team in the tournament after finishing
section play today with victories over Rotorua and Otago before defeating
Hawkes Bay in the play off game.

The upset of the day cane when Hawkes Bay was too strong for the previously
unbeaten Southland as the team from the Bay came out on top 2-1. That
result saw Hawkes Bay claim the top spot in section two.

Defending champions Auckland is only unbeaten team after two days of play
at the New Zealand Community Trust under 19 boy’s championships.

Auckland have been in impressive form at Fraser Park, Lower Hutt today as
they first ended the unbeaten run of Hawkes Bay with a 9-3 win and then
dismissed the Southern Regions team 17-2 with the game called early as the
Aucklanders were ahead by 15 runs after three innings.

Bernard Hale has been a star performer for the Aucklanders he was named the
tournament player of the day after play yesterday and was just as strong
today when in the key match up against Hawkes Bay he picked up three hits
from four at bats.

The upset of the day came late as the previously unbeaten Canterbury were
knocked off their perch by Wellington 3-1. In a close game the southern
side were three outs away from victory when Gary Pointon stepped up to the
plate for Wellington with two runners on base and smashed the ball over the
fence to win the game for his side.

It has not been all bad for Canterbury today though as they were strong
early in the day overcoming home side Hutt Valley 9-4. Going into the game
both sides had still to taste defeat and while the home side took the early
lead they couldn’t maintain it as power hitting from Canterbury took
control of the game.

Of the nine runs Canterbury scored against Hutt Valley six came courtesy of
automatics off the bats of Corey Harbour, Michael Taylor, Penese Iosefo and
Josh Thompson.

Round robin play finishes tomorrow afternoon before the top four teams move
on to the finals series and the fight for the title.
