Auckland retain under 19 boy’s title in a thriller
Thursday January 6th 2005

The fight for the New Zealand Community Trust under 19 boy’s title went
down to the wire at Fraser Park, Lower Hutt today.

In a thrilling final defending champions Auckland have retained the title
winning the final 7-6 over Canterbury in the first tie breaker inning.

Canterbury took the early advantage in the final scoring three runs in the
third inning on the back to automatics from the bats of Anthony Stuart and
Michael Taylor. The Southerners went further ahead in the fourth inning
courtesy on a big home run from Bowen Annandale.

Auckland picked up one run in the fifth inning but when Canterbury scored
two more runs in the top of the sixth inning they looked to have the game
wrapped up at 6-1 but no one told Auckland.

The defending champions took the final down to the wire when Auckland
catcher Jonathan Munden demonstrated the reason for his call up to the New
Zealand Community Trust Black Sox.

In the bottom of the sixth inning Munden stepped up to the plate and
smashed a huge home run with two runners on base to get his team back in
the game. Auckland tied the game up in their final turn at bat in the
bottom of the seventh inning with two further runs to send the game into
tie breaker innings.

Auckland secured the game in the first tie breaker inning after they kept
Canterbury scoreless in the top of the inning and then picked up one title
winning run in their turn at bat.

Following the final New Zealand under 19 coach Mark Sorenson and his
selection panel named a 22 man training squad to prepare for the junior
boy’s World Championships to be held in Canada later this year.
