Home run kings show how it’s done
Thursday February 3rd 2005

A home run double from the New Zealand Community Trust Black
Sox has seenthem defeat Samoa 2-0 in the opening game of the
Evodrive Series inRotorua this morning.

The home run double at Rotorua International Stadium came in
the bottomof the fifth inning when first catcher Patrick Shannon
fired one over thelet field fence off the pitching of his twin
brother Heinie. 

On the back of the home run Heinie Shannon was replaced on the
mound byMichael Roberts but that didn’t stop the runs as Rhys
Casley was next tothe plate and he smashed one over the right
field fence to put the BlackSox 2-0 up.

The Black Sox haven’t taken to the diamond since their victorious
featsat the world championships last year and today’s first up
game was alwaysgoing to involve a few nerves. Coach Eddie Kohlhase
was making his debutas head coach in the game while Wellington’s
Chris Eden-Huria also madehis first official Black Sox appearance
in left outfield as did DamianMcCulloch of Wellington.

On the mound for New Zealand was pitcher Marty Grant and he was
dominantas he faced 25 batters taking eight strikeouts and giving
up just one hitand one walk. Samoa’s only hit in the game came
in the top of the seventhinning when Michael Fenton picked up
a single to left field. Gus Legeralso picked up a walk in the
same inning.   

Starting the game on the mound for Samoa was Heinie Shannon and
while hegave up one automatic home run to his brother he had
a good day on themound. Shannon pitched the opening five innings
facing 14 batters andtaking six strikeouts and giving up just
one hit and one run. 

Michael Roberts replaced Shannon on the mound in the fifth inning
and hefaced seven batters giving up two hits and one run.

In other results from the opening morning of the Evodrive SeriesAustralia
defeated the All Stars 2-0.

The Black Sox have two more games today taking on the All Stars
at 2.30pmand Japan at 7pm.
